About the Role

Our client is searching for an exceptional Principal Bioinformatician to join their pioneering research and development division in Centurion, Gauteng . This senior role is designed for an individual with profound expertise in computational biology and data science, dedicated to extracting actionable insights from complex biological datasets. You will be instrumental in developing and implementing advanced analytical strategies to support our client's innovative drug discovery and development programs. This position offers significant autonomy and the opportunity to influence research direction, working with large-scale omics data, including genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership qualities and a passion for leveraging computational approaches to solve challenging biological problems.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable bioinformatics pipelines for processing and analyzing high-throughput biological data (e.g., NGS, microarray, mass spectrometry).
• Perform in-depth data analysis, including variant calling, gene expression profiling, pathway analysis, and machine learning modeling.
• Develop and implement novel computational methods and algorithms to address complex biological questions.
• Collaborate closely with molecular biologists, geneticists, and pharmacologists to interpret data and drive research projects forward.
• Lead bioinformatics efforts on key drug discovery and development projects.
• Mentor and guide junior bioinformaticians and data analysts.
• Contribute to the development of our client's data infrastructure and computational resources.
• Author and co-author scientific publications and present findings at international conferences.
• Stay current with the latest advancements in bioinformatics, computational biology, and relevant scientific domains.
• Ensure data integrity, reproducibility, and compliance with relevant standards.

Requirements

• PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related quantitative field.
• A minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience in bioinformatics, with a significant portion in a lead or senior role.
• Expertise in programming languages such as Python, R, and/or C++.
• Proficiency with bioinformatics tools, databases, and standard data formats.
• Strong experience in managing and analyzing large-scale omics datasets (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics).
• Solid understanding of statistical modeling, machine learning, and data mining techniques.
• Proven ability to design and implement complex computational workflows.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
• Demonstrated experience in leading research projects and mentoring junior staff.
• Experience with cloud computing environments (AWS, Azure, GCP) is highly desirable.
