Placements24 is seeking a Senior Bioinformatics Scientist in Johannesburg to drive genomics and molecular biology analyses. You will design complex pipelines, perform advanced statistics, and collaborate with clinicians to interpret results. The role requires a PhD and at least 5 years of post-doctoral experience in bioinformatics.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and conduct sophisticated statistical analyses to identify biological patterns, correlations, and significant findings.
• Collaborate closely with molecular biologists, geneticists, and clinicians to define research questions and interpret results.
• Build and maintain databases for biological information, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
• Contribute to the writing of research grants, publications, and presentations for scientific conferences.
• Mentor junior bioinformatics staff and contribute to the overall scientific strategy of the research group.

Requirements

• PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related quantitative field.
• Minimum of 5 years of post‑doctoral research experience in bioinformatics or a closely related field.
• Proven expertise in programming languages such as Python, R, and Perl, and proficiency with bioinformatics tools and databases (e.g., BLAST, Ensembl, UCSC Genome Browser).
• Hands‑on experience with Next‑Generation Sequencing (NGS) data analysis (e.g., WGS, WES, RNA‑Seq).
• Strong understanding of statistical modeling, machine learning techniques, and data visualization.
• Excellent problem‑solving skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively present complex scientific information.
• Experience with cloud computing platforms (AWS, Google Cloud) is a plus.
