MAIN PURPOSE
The Pre-Sales Engineer plays a critical role in bridging the gap between customer requirements and technical solutions. This role is responsible for designing, recommending, and supporting the implementation of tailored solutions involving satellite, microwave, push-to-talk (PTT), and other related communications technologies. In addition to assisting the sales team with technical expertise, the Pre-Sales Engineer also supports post-sales activities, including fault diagnostics, maintenance, and support of deployed customer solutions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Engage with customers alongside the sales team to understand technical requirements and challenges.
- Design and propose fit-for-purpose technical solutions using satellite, microwave, PTT, and other complementary or substitute technologies.
- Prepare and deliver technical presentations and product demonstrations to prospective clients.
- Develop solution architecture documentation, network diagrams, and detailed bills of materials (BOMs).
- Assist with the preparation of technical inputs for proposals, tenders, and cost estimations.
- Collaborate with vendors, OEMs, and internal teams to ensure accurate and feasible solution designs.
- Participate in on-site implementation, configuration, and commissioning of solutions as required.
- Provide technical support for deployed solutions, including remote or on-site fault diagnostics, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Assist with preventive maintenance, system updates, and service improvement initiatives.
- Stay current with new technologies, industry trends, and competitor offerings.
- Maintain accurate records of technical engagements and support activities using CRM and other relevant systems.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education
- Diploma or Degree in Telecommunications, Electronics, IT, or a related engineering field.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar pre-sales or technical role, preferably in satellite, microwave, PTT, or telecoms-related environments.
- Strong knowledge of RF and IP-based communication systems.
- Experience with satellite terminals, microwave links, PTT systems, and related infrastructure.
- Proficiency in solution design tools, network planning, and system integration.
- Intermediate to advanced computer literacy, including the ability to work confidently with Microsoft Office Suite, presentation software, and technical tools.
- Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware and software issues in the field or remotely.
Additional Requirements:
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Must have reliable personal transport.
- Must be willing and able to travel across Africa and to other destinations depending on work requirements, sometimes at short notice.
- Must be willing to participate in customer support, fault diagnostics, and maintenance activities as required.
Desirable Experience:
- Practical, hands-on experience with vendor technologies such as Hytera, Ubiquiti, or similar solutions will be a strong advantage.
- Suitable industry experience may be considered in lieu of formal certifications.
