An innovative research institute is offering a unique postdoctoral opportunity focused on developing point-of-care diagnostics for sugarcane pathogens. The successful candidate will engage in cutting-edge research utilizing advanced molecular biology techniques to translate laboratory findings into practical applications. This role includes training postgraduate students and contributing to a collaborative research environment, fostering independent thinking and problem-solving skills. With a competitive bursary package and a chance to work on impactful projects, this position is perfect for those passionate about plant pathology and molecular diagnostics.
South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI), a division of the South African Sugar Association (SASA), has a 12-month opportunity available for a Postdoctoral Study based in Mount Edgecombe, KwaZulu-Natal.
The opportunity
A postdoctoral position is available in the Crop Biology Resource Centre at SASRI. This position is funded by SASRI for an initial period of one year, which may be renewable for a further year. The position is available from 1 June 2025 and is open to South African residents.
The project focuses on investigating and developing new approaches for point-of-care (PoC) diagnostics using Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) technology to detect the bacterial pathogen of sugarcane, Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli. This technology is known for its high sensitivity, specificity, and tolerance to inhibiting substances. Point-of-care LAMP platforms designed with the principles of microfluidic chip technology, including LAMP on a chip, paper-based LAMP, and smartphone-based LAMP applications, have been reported. The aim of the project is to translate laboratory-based LAMP to an in-field detection platform for rapid, user-friendly detection of L. xyli subsp. xyli.
