Job description

South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI), a division of the South African Sugar Association (SASA), has a 12-month opportunity available for a Postdoctoral Study based in Mount Edgecombe, KwaZulu-Natal.

The opportunity

A postdoctoral position is available in the Crop Biology Resource Centre at SASRI. This position is funded by SASRI for an initial period of one year, which may be renewable for a further year. The position is available from 1 June 2025 and is open to South African residents.

The project focuses on investigating and developing new approaches for point-of-care (PoC) diagnostics using Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) technology to detect the bacterial pathogen of sugarcane, Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli. This technology is known for its high sensitivity, specificity, and tolerance to inhibiting substances. Point-of-care LAMP platforms designed with the principles of microfluidic chip technology, including LAMP on a chip, paper-based LAMP, and smartphone-based LAMP applications, have been reported. The aim of the project is to translate laboratory-based LAMP to an in-field detection platform for rapid, user-friendly detection of L. xyli subsp. xyli.

The candidate

  • Must have a strong skill set in molecular biology techniques
  • Will be involved in general laboratory operations and the training and supervision of postgraduate students
  • Should possess strong communication skills, good time management, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
  • Must demonstrate independent thinking, record keeping, and proficiency with online and electronic platforms for data and sample management
  • Hold a PhD in Plant Pathology or a related discipline, obtained within the last five years
  • Have recent peer-reviewed publications in accredited journals
  • Demonstrable experience with molecular and cell biology techniques (e.g., RT-qPCR, Next Generation Sequencing, ELISA, or cell-based assays)

Comprehensive applications should include:

  • A cover letter summarizing your background, interests, and how your skills match the project requirements
  • A detailed CV including ISI-listed publications
  • Letters of support and contact details of two academic referees
  • An academic transcript listing your PhD degree
  • A representative publication supporting your research experience

The position

  • The successful candidate will receive a package that includes a competitive bursary

Please note:

  • The closing date for applications is 30 April 2025
  • Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates. SASRI reserves the right not to make an appointment
