Description :

The Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PDRF) to work with an interdisciplinary team on a new project which seeks to estimate the social economic health and healthcare impact of the April 2022 KwaZuluNatal floods on PLHIV and evaluate high priority policy interventions using participatory methods and multicriteria decision analysis.

Overview of Duties : Background

Due to the increased frequency and severity of extreme weather events (EWEs) such as floods in South Africa there is the increased risk of poor health outcomes especially for the most vulnerable populations especially people living with HIV (PLHIV) in our society. This is because the impacts of these events can be unevenly experienced and managed by different societies and population groups. This new project provides an opportunity to work with an impressive multidisciplinary team working on climate change and health issues. The candidate will work within the climate change and health programme under the guidance of the principal investigator and the mentorship of the study principal investigators and coinvestigators. This position is based across the two AHRI campuses and accepted candidates will be based in Durban while supporting the study at both sites.

Qualifications and experience :

  • PhD in economics development studies social sciences or related disciplines
  • Completed or about to complete their PhD degree (PhD not older than five years)
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative skills : proficiency in mixed methods (e.g. cluster) analysis
  • Experience in coordinating multistakeholder workshops is desirable
  • Experience with local / national NPO / NGO / CSO environment
  • Experience in research project coordination data quality control and public engagement is desirable
  • Fluency in isiZulu is also desirable

The stipend for this position depends on previous experience and brackets are according to AHRIs official scheme and NRF grades which will be without tax deduction due to tax exemption status for postdoctoral fellows. There is no relocation allowance for this position.
