Job summary

Transnet is seeking a Port Worker in Cape Town to assist in daily operations, maintain a safe and clean working environment, and support cargo handling tasks.

You will perform equipment cleaning, inspections, and documentation, with emphasis on safety and accuracy. The role is based in Cape Town's port area and requires practical port operation knowledge.

This position reports to the Operations Manager and may require shift work and adherence to procedures.

Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year port operation experience or similar requested.
• Relevant certificate added advantage (ROC) or equivalent.
• Port operation exposure is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Clean operational equipment including ship-to-shore cranes and cabins.
• Inspect container condition.
• Monitor reefers as part of operations.
• Open/close rail wagon twist-locks.
• Load/off-load and slack cargo per SOPs.
• Hook/unhook equipment.
• Tarping/untarping as required.
• Place/remove dunnage.
• Clean areas and facilities as instructed.
• Complete accident reports and related documentation.
• Identify correct cargo handling equipment/gear.

Port Worker

Position Purpose

The provision of labour as directed by supervisor in order to ensure a safe and clean working environment or optimised cargo operation.

Position Outputs

• Cleaning of operational equipment (such as ship to shore cranes’ windows; cranes’ cabins;etc.)
• Inspection of container condition
• Reefer monitoring operations
• Opening and closing of rail wagons twist-locks
• Loading off-loading and slacking of cargo in compliance of standard operating procedures
• Hooking/ unhooking
• Tarping/ untarping where applicable
• Place/ remove dunnage
• Cleaning of operational areas, rail trucks, plant, workshops, offices, sheds and ablution facilities as instructed.
• Complete applicable documentation i.e. accident reports
• Identification of correct cargo handling equipment/ gear

Qualifications and Experience

• Grade 12 / NQF 04 Minimum of 1 year experience (Port operation experience added advantage) Relevant Certificate (Added Advantage) OR ROC
• Grade 10 / NQF02 Minimum of 2 years’ experience (Port operation experience added advantage) Relevant Certificate (Added Advantage)
