PhD Opportunity: Smart Milking for a Sustainable Future

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD position jointly hosted by Teagasc Moorepark and University College Dublin, Ireland. This four-year, full-time project will focus on advancing smart milking technologies to promote sustainable dairy farming practices.

The Successful Candidate Will

– Investigate the impact of milking machine performance and farmer interaction with technology on udder health, mastitis control, and milk recording accuracy.

– Conduct field trials, data analysis, and stakeholder engagement to develop evidence-based guidelines for the adoption of smart milking technologies.

– Adapt research outcomes to the specific conditions of Irish dairy farming, aiming to enhance herd health, increase cow longevity, and support sustainable dairy systems.

– Benefit from access to state-of-the-art research facilities, specialized training, and direct engagement with Ireland’s dairy and agri-tech sectors.

Requirements

– A first or upper second-class honours degree in agricultural engineering, animal science, veterinary medicine, or a related discipline.

– Demonstrated motivation, problem-solving ability, and data analysis skills.

– A Master’s degree, experience with statistical tools, and knowledge of the dairy industry, milk quality, or milking technology are advantageous.

– Full driver’s license is required.

Funding: €31,000 per year (comprising a €25,000 stipend plus €6,000 fees covered).

Start Date: As soon as possible after September 1st, 2025.
