Job summary

Dis-Chem Pharmacies is seeking a qualified Pharmacist to dispense medications and provide pharmaceutical expertise to patients and healthcare professionals. The role requires SAPC registration, a BPharm or equivalent, and 2–3 years of retail pharmacy experience.

Responsibilities include dispensing under supervision, ensuring accurate scripting, and processing medical aid claims. You must be customer-focused with strong communication and computer skills, in a retail environment.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 / Matric is required.
  • BPharm / equivalent qualification.
  • Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
  • Min 2–3 years' experience in Pharmacy and 2–3 years retail pharmacy experience.
  • Computer literate – MS Office.

Responsibilities

  • Dispense medication under direct supervision of Pharmacist.
  • Interpret scripts accurately and comply with SAPC requirements.
  • Capture script details and verify patient information in the system.
  • Ensure accurate picking, packing, labeling, and checking of medications.
  • Provide instructions to patients on correct medicine usage.
  • Keep up with medical aid procedures and claims requirements.
  • Advise patients at the dispensary and front-shop.
  • Process paperwork for medical aid submissions and correct rejected scripts.
  • Maintain and merge customer profiles in the system.
  • Manage stock levels and assist with stock takes.

Job description

Responsible for dispensing medications, providing pharmaceutical expertise to patients and healthcareprofessionals, and ensuring the safe and effective use of prescription medications.

Minimum Requirements
Essential:
  • Grade 12 / Matric
  • BPharm / equivalent qualification
  • Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC)
  • Min 2- 3 years' experience in Pharmaceutical
  • 2-3 years retail pharmacy experience
  • Computer literate – MS Office
Advantageous:
  • Relevant retail/ FMCG experience
  • Third additional language
  • SAP experience
  • E-scripting experience

Duties and Responsibilities
Dispensing of Medication:
  • Dispensing of Medication under direct personal supervision of Pharmacist
  • Accurately interpret scripts and act in a professional and responsible manner and within the legal requirements in accordance with the South African Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Capture script details accurately and verify patient’s details on the system.
  • Ensure accurate picking / packing / labelling and checking of medication and be aware of common dosages as well as important drug interactions.
  • Provide accurate instructions to the patients regarding the correct use of medicine supplied.
  • Keep abreast of changes in medical aid procedures and requirements for claims and dispensing.
Customer Service:
  • Advise and assist patients at the dispensary, self-medication counter and front-shop.
  • Follow up with patients regarding script tracking report as requested by the dispensary manager and follow up appointments.
  • Explain all medical aid costs to patients. Administration:
  • Process all paperwork necessary for the accurate submission of claims to medical aids.
  • Correct errors on scripts rejected by medical aid.
  • Ensure authorization of chronic, HIV and AIDS and oncology medication.
  • Maintain customer profiles on the system.
  • Merge profiles locally and Vexall should be notified to merge profiles centrally.
  • Take note of any messages on the customer profile and take suitable action.
Stock Control:
  • Report on low - / out of stock levels and stock errors to the dispensary manager.
  • Facilitate Bi-annual stock takes.
  • Exercise stock, cash and asset control
Competencies:
Essential:
  • Comprehensive medicine knowledge including common dosing regimes, interactions and counselling to ensure appropriate and effective treatment outcomes. Understanding of Retail as pertains to pharmacy.
  • Ability to think critically
  • Possess excellent communication skills to guide patients on medication usage and side effects. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate with people from all sections of the community. English and 2nd language – Read, write and speak
  • Finds solutions to potential issues as well as knowing when to raise the problem and what level to raise it to.
  • Acts as a role model to others and talks to others about the need for high standards and quality. Demonstrates drive to ensure that quality is not compromised.
  • Time management. Able to meet deadlines. Demonstrate patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Computer, numerical skills. Unisolv and SAP, E-Scripting
Special conditions of employment:
  • Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council
  • Willing and able to work retail hours
  • Controlled room temperature, security, limited space, health and safety, risk stock
  • Physically fit and able to stand for long periods
  • Valid driver’s license and own reliable transport
