Job summary

A municipal health office in Cape Town is seeking a qualified Pharmacist responsible for ensuring legal compliance and effective management of pharmacy activities. The successful candidate will oversee the acquisition, storage, and dispensing of medication, manage pharmacy staff, and support medical personnel in rational prescribing. Candidates must hold a relevant degree and have at least three years of experience in health care.

Qualifications

  • Must be registered with South African Pharmacy Council as a Pharmacist.
  • At least three years’ experience in primary health care is preferred.
  • Valid Code 8 driver’s license is required.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure pharmacy compliance with the Pharmacy Act.
  • Manage medication acquisition, storage, dispensing, and supply.
  • Oversee stock management to maintain product integrity.
  • Supervise Pharmacist's Assistants.
  • Monitor pharmaceutical expenditure and inform budget trends.

Requirements
  • Diploma in Pharmacy or Bachelor of Pharmacy degree
  • Current registration with the South African Pharmacy Council as a Pharmacist
  • At least three years’ experience, preferably in the primary health care environment
  • Sound knowledge of current medicines and the essential drug list
  • Proven interpersonal and administrative skills
  • An eye for detail

Key Performance Areas
  • Ensure legal compliance by ensuring that the pharmacy complies with the provisions of the Pharmacy Act
  • Manage the pharmacy in a clinic or community health setting by:
    • Acquisition, ordering, storage, dispensing, and supply of medication (acute and chronic) & related products
    • Effective stock management & control to maintain product integrity and security
    • Implementation of drug management policies and procedures
    • Day-to-day management of Pharmacist's Assistants
    • Monitoring medicine usage, pharmaceutical expenditure, and informing the Clinic Manager of budget trends
    • Informing the Clinic Manager of locum requirements
    • Supporting and advising medical and paramedical staff on medicine use, rational prescribing, and budget management
    • Developing Pharmacist's Assistants to ensure trained and legally compliant staff
    • Performing administrative tasks for an efficient pharmacy
