Job summary

Stellenbosch University is seeking a Part-time Medical Technologist for a fixed-term contract in the Department of Pathology. Duties/Pligte

  • Liaising with laboratories in Africa (Kenya, Ghana, Uganda) who will ship isolates to Stellenbosch University (SU).
  • Reconciling shipping logs with received isolates.
  • Assessing purity and viability of isolates, and identifying isolates using MS and/or PCR.
  • Performing susceptibility testing of isolates using broth microdilution, agar dilution and gradient diffusion, in line with international guidelines.
  • Preparing isolates for long term storage at -80C.
  • Managing the quality management system for the above activities, including equipment logs, QC, documentation and corrective action / preventive action as needed.


Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

  • Appropriate qualification as a medical technologist (clinical pathology or microbiology).
  • Registration with the HPCSA as a medical technologist.
  • At least five years' experience working in an accredited microbiology laboratory.


Recommendation/Aanbeveling

  • Experience working in a research environment would be preferable.
  • Experience with laboratory accreditation and ISO15189 would be preferable.
