Part-time (5/8th) Maties Football Women's Head Coach (Post Level 9)

The Women's Head Coach of Maties Football at Stellenbosch University (SU) will be responsible for fostering strong working relationships with all relevant coaches within the Club to ensure alignment in coaching philosophy, player development and performance goals.
The Women's Head Coach reports directly to the Football Club Manager. The Head Coach will also be required to work closely with the Senior Manager: Maties Sport High Performance and all service providers forming part of the performance enhancement team of Maties Football Club and all other relevant coaches and support staff within the Club.
Duties/Pligte
Recruitment And Retention
- Developing, optimising, and implementing a three-yr (2025-2028) Recruitment and Retention Strategy of talent identification, scouting and recruitment that corresponds with SU's admissions policy and academic requirements, working with the Football Manager.
- Developing and implementing a sustainable recruitment plan focused on the Women's Football Campus League to form part of the Football Club's overall recruitment strategy.
- Developing, optimising, and implementing a three-yr (2025-2028) sport bursary budget in line with Maties Sport allocations that incentivises the recruitment, development and retention of female student-athlete football players.
- Developing a long-term player development pathway for first-year women's football players that focus on sustainable performance enhancement, football skills development and academics success.
- Promoting the quality of opportunities for the ACI students as a priority strategic objective.
- Working with the Football Sport Manager and the Senior Manager: Maties Sport High Performance in the facilitation, implementation, and monitoring of the annual sport bursary budget according to SU's and Maties Sport's requirements for the final approval from the Chief-Director: Maties Sport.
Coaching
- Coaching the Maties Football Women's high-performance squad for participation in the annual University Sport South Africa (USSA) competitions, annual Varsity Sports Football competitions and respective local leagues for the annual calendar.
- Performing required coaching sessions (team, positional, individual) with student-athletes, to be equipped and skilled to create and implement a high-quality coaching programme, to maximise participation and performance of competitive teams.
- Continuous development and implementation of long-term women's football student-athlete development planning and programming.
- Participating and contributing to meetings with Maties Football coaches, the club manager and coaching support staff to plan training sessions, identify growth opportunities and enhance the retention of coaching staff. Developing coaching mentorship and continued education plans for the women's football coaching structures.
- Monitoring, evaluating, reporting on and documenting learnings from women's football activities and programmes, ensuring accurate record-keeping to support concise monthly progress reports and training logs. Actively engaging in continuous personal development and attending relevant training courses to improve coaching delivery and the development of Maties Women's Football.
- Leading, participating, contributing and/or delivering football coaching workshops, forums, clinics or any of such nature that aligns with the Maties Football Club¿s strategic objectives that includes social impact, education, and commercialisation.
Integrated Medicine And Science (IMAS) And Student-Athlete Support
- Managing and implementing an effective IMAS programme to ensure continued enhancement of performance in all competitions and leagues, in close collaboration with the Maties Sport High Performance Unit, and medical staff of Maties Sport and Campus Health Services.
- Collaborating with the Maties Football Club Manager and Senior Manager: Maties Sport High Performance to maximise the HP IMAS budget and performance enhancement service interventions.
- Implementing, delivering and reporting individual academic and performance assessments of all bursary student-athletes to ensure commitment to the academic and football performance standards and coaching development programmes.
- Implementing, delivering and reporting participation of all student-athletes to actively promote the Maties Sport PACER programme aimed at ensuring holistic development.
- Implementing, delivering and reporting on initiatives that empower Maties Football coaches, teams and student-athletes to optimise the use of evidence-based interventions aimed at enhancing athletic performance. Contributing to the overall functioning of the Maties Football annual performance plans and its future by accepting responsibilities for sustainability, and adhering to a code of high-performance ethics and conduct.
- Promoting drug free sport amongst the student-athletes.
Operational Excellence
- Leading planning meetings with the Maties Football Women's support staff of the HP squad, and all other teams or players involved in Maties Football and relevant stakeholders.
- Leading quarterly Performance Enhancement Team Meetings chaired by the Senior Manager Maties Sport High Performance.
- Being an active participating and contributing member of the Maties Football Club Committee.
- Preparing and submitting timeously relevant written reports to the Maties Football Manager.
- Preparing and submitting timeously relevant written reports for management committee and executive committee meetings.
- Contributing and playing an active role in the process of Maties Football Club's three to five year realignment process to ensure long term financial, operational as well as performance sustainability.
Club Operations
- Managing the women's football coaching staff.
- Assisting with and playing an active role to support the club manager to coordinate and implement social impact projects aligned to the strategic objectives of the Football Club and Maties Sport.
- Assisting with the planning and implementation of fundraising initiatives to generate revenue for the club and support broader fundraising ventures.
Performance Management
An annual performance management review will take place and will include the following:
- Quarterly work agreement scorecard reviews of the head coach to the Senior Manager: High Performance Unit and Maties Football Club Manager. The quarterly report must be submitted ten days prior to the date of the meeting.
- The purpose of the quarterly review ensures regular performance management and serves to assess and review the status of the Head Coach's performance in line with the work agreement and score card and will determine the continuity of the remainder of the contract period.
Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes
- At least three years' experience in coaching a senior first team within the respective federation competition/league.
- At least a CAF B coaching licence.
- The ability to work effectively as part of an integrated medicine and science and coaching team;
- The ability to give strategic direction in an ever-increasing professional environment.
- Participative and effective leadership and management style.
- High level of management and leadership skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- The ability and sophistication needed to interact with business, government, federations/unions/franchises, and other national stakeholders such as schools.
- Result-oriented.
- Computer literacy with regard to MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Administrative skills such as the ability to provide accurate and informative written and verbal reports.
- The ability to take initiative, be innovative and to function effectively under pressure.
- The ability to prioritise effectively.
- Accuracy in performing administrative tasks.
- Excellent time management skills.
- The ability to respect and maintain confidentiality.
- Willingness and availability to work after hours, including evenings, weekends and public holidays.
- A valid driver's license and own transport.
Recommendation/Aanbeveling
- CAF A Licence.
- Applied knowledge and experience working with athletes on a development pathway.
- Experience in the delivery of high-performance coaching/assistant-coaching within the University Football Competition.
- Knowledge and understanding of university sport.
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Understanding and experience in identifying, establishing, and monitoring focus schools.
- Experience in player scouting and engagement with national coaches.

- Establishing an integrated internal and external three-year strategic recruitment plan to establish a sustainable model for the student-athlete women's football programme.
- Integrating and implementing the Maties Sport IMAS High Performance Programme.
- USSA A-Section qualification, top 12 finish in A-section and subsequent top 8 finish to qualify for Varsity Sport Women's Football 2028 (with long-term student-athlete as focus area).
- Establishing a sustainable women's football coaching structure to ensure top performance in all relevant university sport competitions.
- Anchoring the Maties Women's Football programme as a key strategic objective pillar for Maties Sport and Maties Football.
