Job description

Background : Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences. WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to Academics.

Main purpose of the job : To perform all duties of a pharmacist for the Clinical Trial and CHBAH NICU Pharmacy in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures, sponsor requirements and local (South African) Regulatory requirements. To collaborate or work together and support the Department of Pharmacy at CHBAH in provision of pharmaceutical care for patients at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH), including admixing of medicines and supporting NICU patients.

Location : Chris Hani Baragwanath, Soweto - Johannesburg

Key performance areas :

  1. To ensure any pharmacy related problems identified in an access programme are immediately brought to the attention of the Programme / Project Manager where applicable.
  2. To be the primary liaison for allocated access programmes with the study / study PI and / or Programme / Project Manager where applicable, for any pharmacy related issues.
  3. To ensure that medication (treatment / study drug) is ordered, received, dispensed, returned and destroyed appropriately according to specific sponsor / study requirements and to ensure that these actions are documented accurately and timeously.
  4. Ensure that drug accountability is done and completed accurately for each subject enrolled in a study according to guidelines and regulations described above.
  5. Ensure that accurate compliance monitoring is done and documented appropriately.
  6. To instruct patients on the proper use of the drugs that they are taking and stress the importance of following these instructions and to take any required corrective actions where problems have been identified.
  7. Contribute to the pharmacy's expansion plan where required, to assure adequate and effective running of the pharmacy.
  8. Meet with sponsor / programme personnel at regularly intervals and with regulatory personnel at any monitoring / auditing visit(s).
  9. Develop programme specific and general pharmacy plans in accordance to sponsor / programme requirements.
  10. To evaluate the patient medicine-related needs by determining the indication, safety, and effectiveness of the prescribed therapy.
  11. To dispense medicines or scheduled substances as prescribed according to hospital Standard Operating Procedures.
  12. To determine compliance to therapy and follow up to ensure the patient's medicine-related needs are met.
  13. To ensure compliance with standard operating procedures and statutory regulations (GPP, GCP, GMP, etc.).
  14. To ensure safekeeping of pharmaceuticals, implementing measures to prevent fruitless and wasteful expenditure.
  15. To deputize for the senior pharmacists and be available for on call after hours services and / or shift work.
  16. Develop pharmacy related SOPs.
  17. Supervision of pharmacist assistant / s.

Required minimum education and training :

  1. Grade 12
  2. Qualified Pharmacist
  3. Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm Degree) or equivalent qualification accredited by the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) that allows registration with the SAPC as a Pharmacist
  4. Registration with the SAPC as Pharmacist and proof of current registration

Require minimum work experience : 2 Years experience working as a Pharmacist in a clinical research environment

Professional body registration : Registered with SA Pharmacy Council. PSSA membership and medical indemnity will be advantageous.

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities : The candidate must also be able to work in a highly stressful environment. Be very organised and possess good time management skills. Problem solving skills. Be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Be attentive to detail as well as computer literate.
