Job description

Ophthalmic Assistant (Ophthalmology Practice) - Northern Johannesburg

Our client, an Ophthalmology Practice based in the northern parts of Johannesburg, is seeking to employ an Ophthalmic Assistant or juniorOptometrist with an interest in Ocular Pathology to join their practice.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Patient management
  • Patient history and VA's
  • Appropriate tests/imaging such as OCT, Colour Montages, Glaucoma testing, NFLA & visual fields
  • Fluorescein angiographies
  • Preparation for procedures
  • Assisting with procedures - injections, laser procedures
  • Patient queries and follow ups
  • Attend to reporting and electronic Medical notes where necessary
  • Administer Ophthalmic or oral medication under the guidance of the ophthalmologist
  • Following the necessary protocol and ensuring equipment is sterile and cleanliness of the practice is adhered to
  • Prepping sterile packs
  • Washing and Autoclaving of packs
  • Cataract surgery list & preparations
  • Consent, information & authorisations (working with the reception staff)
  • Post-op follow-up and information
  • Provide patient education based on the diagnosis and patient needs
  • Stock control & orders to maintain stock levels within the practice
  • Equipment service dates
  • Emergency protocols & medical emergencies
  • Answering the phone when needed
  • Assist with bookings and billing (consultations & theatre)
  • Progress reports
  • All medical aid queries
  • assist with admin duties when needed

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Optometrist or Ophthalmic Assistant qualification is essential
  • Ophthalmic Assistant experience (checking visual acuity, fundus photos, OCT & visual fields) is essential
