Job summary

Sappi is seeking an Operator: SLS Assistant to support the SLS Operator in managing the spray dryer, decanter, stack centrifuge, and bagging plant to meet quality and production targets. The role focuses on safety, equipment readiness, and efficient process operations in a dynamic woodfibre mill environment.

Requirements include Matric/N3 or equivalent, at least 6 months of plant operations experience, and computer literacy (MS Office).

Qualifications

• Matric and/or N3 Pulp and Paper Certificate (4 subjects) and/or Relevant NQF Level 4 Qualification.
• Minimum 6 Months Plant Operations Experience.
• Computer Literate (MS Office Package)

Responsibilities

• Conducts Plant inspection on field equipment to ensure that the equipment is in a safe working condition.
• Prepares Spray dryer, SD Decanter and Stack Centrifuge for start-up and shut down according to BOP’s.
• Operates bagging plant and auxiliary equipment.
• Assists SLS operator with Plant isolation clearances.
• Monitors bagging plant production and reports non-conformances to SLS operator.
• Fills SLS powder bags to the correct mass and ensures that bags are sealed prior to transporting to warehouse.
• Label SLS powder bags with barcode tags.
• Clearing blockages in lines, pumps, rotary valves, scrubber, Decanter etc.
• Collects samples for laboratory testing.
• Follow all reasonable instructions given by Foreman and SLS operators.
• Assist SLS operator with problem solving on plant related issues.
• Relieves Process operator during lunch and toilet breaks.
• Reports on all defects and equipment malfunctions to Process Operator.
• Regularly Inspects equipment for preventative maintenances purposes.
• Comply with all relevant SHEQ requirements of the job.
• Identify and take corrective action in terms of SHEQ conditions and hazards.
• Maintains a high level of good housekeeping in the workplace at all times.

We’re on the lockout for an Operator : SLS Assistant The incumbent in this position will effectively assist the SLS Operator to manage and control resources within his area of responsibility (SLS Spray dryer & bagging plant) with the objective of producing quality and quantity products according to customer requirements, mill standards and Plant objectives.
