Job description

OPERATIONS MANAGER (Full-Time or Part-Time)

Start date: As soon as possible

Purpose of the Job:
To provide strategic vision and support to the Headmaster and Business Manager to ensure the effective management of non-academic operations at our College and Prep schools.

This role is vital in ensuring operational excellence, compliance with regulations, and alignment with the St Andrew’s College strategic goals. The ideal candidate will demonstrate leadership, innovation, and a strong commitment to fostering an optimal learning environment.

This position could be of interest to people within the Andrean Community who may be interested in a part-time role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Advisory Role:

  • Advise the Senior Management Team on boarder houses, staff residences, premises, Health & Safety,
    compliance, and administrative aspects.

Campus Management:

  • Collect, collate and support the accommodation application process in real time.
    • Track and monitor application progress, ensuring timely updates.

Campus Development:

  • Oversight and project management of a wide-ranging campus development plan which is being devised as
    the College leads up to our 175th anniversary in 2030.

Legal and Safety Compliance:

  • Maintain legal and safety requirements for people, property, and school functions.

Transport Fleet Management:

  • Oversee maintenance, rostering, and compliance of the transport fleet.

Cost-Effective Delivery:

  • Ensure the cost-effective and efficient achievement of outcomes set by the Headmaster and Council.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Health & Safety:

  • Chair the Health and Safety Committee.
  • Formulate, monitor, implement, and review the Health & Safety policy.
  • Report to the Headmaster and Business Manager on Health & Safety.
  • Ensure risk assessments for school trips and activities.
  • Prepare and maintain a contingency and business continuity plan.
  • Ensure the School has appropriate insurance coverage.
  • Facilitate regular audits and inspections.

Campus Development and Management:

  • Oversight and Project Management for campus development.
  • Maintain and repair facilities in consultation with relevant staff.
  • Advise on emergency and Health & Safety measures.
  • Oversee security, maintenance, heating, cleaning, and general services.
  • Manage procurement and maintenance of school assets.
  • Ensure compliance with municipal, provincial, and national regulations.
  • Oversee the letting of school premises for external use.

Administration and Procurement:

  • Prepare an annual budget for operational areas.
  • Ensure financial controls align with school policies.
  • Manage contracts with external service providers.
  • Safeguard and manage school fixed assets.

Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with legal and statutory requirements.
  • Update Senior Management on new regulations.
  • Handle licensing and liaise with authorities.

REQUIREMENTS:
Personal Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong integrity and values-driven leadership.
  • Ability to navigate complexity and change effectively.
  • Strong negotiation and problem-solving skills.
  • Fluency in English; isiXhosa proficiency is an advantage.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or NQF equivalent in Operations Management or related field.
  • Advanced certifications in facilities, project, or risk management are advantageous.

Experience:

  • Minimum 7-10 years in operations management, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of LRA, BCEA, and EE.
