Job summary

Placements24 is seeking an Operations Geologist for Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, to provide real-time geological support during drilling. You will interpret data from logs, cores, and cuttings, update models, and work with drilling engineers to optimize well placement and trajectory.

The role requires 5+ years in operations geology, proficiency with well-logging software, and knowledge of seismic interpretation. A hybrid work model and relocation support are offered.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Geology or Earth Sciences; a Master’s degree is preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years in operations geology within Oil & Gas.
• Proficient in well logging techniques and software (GeoGraphix, Petrel).
• Familiar with seismic interpretation and sequence stratigraphy.
• Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities under pressure.
• Effective communication and teamwork with drilling personnel.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including rotations.
• Knowledge of East Coast basin geology is advantageous.
• Must be legally eligible to work in South Africa.

Responsibilities

• Provide geological oversight and real-time decision-making during drilling operations.
• Interpret geological data from well logs, cores, and cuttings to identify lithology, stratigraphy, and hydrocarbon indicators.
• Update geological models and well plans based on real-time drilling information.
• Collaborate with the drilling team to monitor progress and ensure wellbore integrity.
• Identify and assess formation pressures, potential hazards, and drilling challenges.
• Coordinate with geoscientists and engineers to optimize well placement and trajectory.
• Prepare end-of-well geological reports summarizing findings and recommendations.
• Ensure adherence to safety protocols and environmental guidelines during all operations.
• Participate in post-well analysis and contribute to learnings for future projects.
• Assist in the evaluation of exploration and appraisal targets.
