OPERATIONS CONTROLLER (Road Freight) – Western Cape

Our client, a highly established and reputable road freight firm, is currently expanding their team and seeking a dynamic Operations Controller to join their team of professionals.
We are looking for a confident, persuasive, disciplined, and engaging professional with strong commercial awareness and a good understanding of margin control.
You should excel in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, applying effective planning and organizational skills across multiple tasks.
Main Purpose of the Role:
You will be responsible for end-to-end load coordination, transporter management, and customer service delivery. Additionally, you will be involved in business development, focusing on acquiring new clients, onboarding transporters, and growing the transport network to support the company’s operational and revenue targets.
Key Responsibilities:
- Transport Operations & Load Coordination:
- Plan, allocate, and manage road freight bookings from pickup to delivery.
- Monitor real-time progress of loads to ensure timely delivery and resolve issues proactively.
- Manage daily communication with drivers, transporters, and clients.
- Capture and maintain accurate load and trip data on internal systems.
- Client Acquisition & Sales Development:
- Actively source and onboard new clients requiring transport brokerage services.
- Conduct cold calls, follow-ups, and attend meetings (virtual or in-person) to secure new accounts.
- Build a pipeline of potential clients and maintain CRM or lead-tracking reports.
- Work toward sales targets / KPIs aligned with company growth objectives.
- Transporter Recruitment & Onboarding:
- Identify, vet, and onboard new carriers and independent transporters into the network.
- Assist admin department to ensure all onboarding documents are collected.
- Negotiate transporter rates aligned with company margins and market standards.
- Ensure new transporters are trained on operational procedures and expectations.
- Customer & Carrier Relationship Management:
- Build and maintain strong, professional relationships with both clients and transporters.
- Resolve service delivery issues with urgency and professionalism.
- Provide updates, feedback, and after-sales support to clients as needed.
- Documentation & Compliance:
- Ensure proper collection of PODs and supporting documentation. Assist admin with the collection of PODs and supporting documentation.
- Monitor and enforce transporter compliance with regulatory and internal standards.
- Maintain transporter and client onboarding records in compliance with audit standards.
- Reporting & Administration:
- Generate daily/weekly reports on load performance, sales activity, and transporter capacity.
- Track onboarding progress, sales pipeline status, and transporter availability.
- Contribute to team meetings and suggest operational improvements based on performance data.
Minimum Requirements:
- Grade 12
- B. Com Logistics Degree / similar preferred
- 5+ years of operations or load control experience within the Road Freight / Transport Brokering industry
- Proven experience in handling loads from clients
- Experience with Container Transport is advantageous
- Proven sales success record
