Relocating to Australia: Guide for South African Occupational Therapists

What’s Included in Your Relocation Package:

  • Employer-paid one-way flight to Australia
  • Full visa sponsorship (Subclass 482 – Temporary Skill Shortage visa)
  • AHPRA Stage 2 supervision costs fully covered
  • Professional development and training paid for

  • 4 weeks annual leave and 10 days personal leave
  • 12% employer pension contribution (superannuation)
  • Paid travel kilometers for community visits
  • Options in both clinic-based and community OT roles

Your Pathway to Australia:

1. Qualification Check

You’ll need a recognised OT degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) from a university accepted by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

2. Skills Assessment

Complete a skills assessment through the Occupational Therapy Council (OTC) of Australia. This may include a desktop review or supervised practice.

3. English Proficiency

Most applicants will need to complete an approved English language test such as IELTS or PTE.

4. AHPRA Registration

Register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. If supervision is required, it will be coordinated and paid for by your employer.

5. Visa Application

Most candidates will be sponsored on a Subclass 482 visa, with pathways to permanent residency available (Subclass 186, 189, 190, or 491).
