Job description

Health and Safety Officer

Provide Health and Safety Support & Services by ensuring compliance with OHS regulations and standards. Offer health and safety support and services to promote a safe work environment.

  1. Ensure that employees and contractors comply with safety regulations and policies.
  2. Identify training needs and facilitate employee and organizational health and safety training, including ongoing refresher courses.
  3. Conduct and maintain an updated occupational health risk register.
  4. Implement and monitor operational controls to reduce workplace risks.
  5. Record and report data on occupational incidents, workplace health statistics, and trends.
  6. Develop and implement emergency response plans and coordinate drills.
  7. Ensure the availability and proper use of PPE by employees.
  8. Minimize the organization’s environmental impact through sustainable waste management and pollution control strategies.
  9. Maintain records, files, registers, and technical reports related to safety, health, and environmental activities.
  10. Establish and manage sustainable Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) committees.
  11. Develop and coordinate OHS induction, awareness, and training programs for managers, employees, operators, and contractors.
  12. Ensure organizational adaptability to changing medical protocols and develop mechanisms to address nonconformances and implement corrective actions.
Requirements
  1. A 3-year National Diploma, BTech, or Bachelor's degree in Health and Safety, Environment, or related fields.
  2. Postgraduate qualification is advantageous.
  3. At least 3 years of experience in safety, health, and environmental management.
  4. Implementation experience with OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 standards.
  5. Completed courses such as SAMTRAC and/or NOSA.
  6. Optional: Professional membership with the South African Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (SAIOSH) at a graduate member level or higher.
  7. Strong environmental compliance knowledge.
  8. Good verbal and written communication skills.
  9. Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
Additional Information

Remuneration will be competitive and aligned with responsibilities and position stature. The appointment is subject to security clearance. Preference will be given to designated groups per the ARC Employment Equity Plan. The position is permanent, with a six-month probation period.
