Hilton College is a leading independent boarding school for boys set on a beautiful nature reserve in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands. Established in 1872, our prestigious school has been at the forefront of educational excellence and student well-being for over 150 years. The school attracts students from all over South Africa as well as those who are internationally based.

The Position:

Our sanatorium is integral to maintaining the health and wellness of our vibrant student community. The college is seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and skilled Nurse to join our school sanatorium on a permanent, full-time basis. The successful applicant is expected to take up the post from June 2025.

The Nurse will provide direct care to our students, collaborating with parents, teachers, and administrative staff to ensure a safe and nurturing environment. The position would report to the Senior Nurse or a designated member of the school’s management team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide primary healthcare and emergency treatment to students during shifts, including some night duties.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate and confidential medical records.
  • Support health education programs for students and staff.
  • Collaborate with external healthcare providers, parents, and school administration.
  • Ensure adherence to health policies and procedures in line with best practices.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Professional Nurse registered with the South African Nursing Council
  • Minimum of 4 years of nursing experience, preferably in paediatric, school health, or primary health care nursing
  • A dispensing license or willingness to obtain one.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle emergencies with composure and make sound decisions.
  • A compassionate nature and commitment to student welfare.
  • Clinical Expertise
    • Proficiency in paediatric and adolescent healthcare.
    • Ability to diagnose and treat common ailments and injuries.
  • Communication Skills:
    • Effective verbal and written communication with students, parents, teachers, and staff.
    • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and professionalism.
  • IT and Organizational Skills:
    • High levels of computer literacy (Microsoft Suite).
    • Competence in managing health records and documentation.
  • Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Skills:
    • Ability to assess clinical situations and make informed decisions.
    • Skill in crisis management and responding effectively to emergencies.
  • Adaptability and Flexibility:
    • Ability to work under pressure and respond to varying health needs throughout the school year.
    • Flexibility to adapt health programs to the needs of the student population in line with the Senior Nurse and school policy.
    • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Compassion and Empathy:
    • Genuine concern for the health and well-being of children and adolescents.
    • Ability to create a caring and supportive environment.
