The Department of Physics and Electronics invites suitably qualified candidates to join their team.

Department Description

The Department of Physics at Rhodes University seeks to appoint a Lecturer with expertise in solid state physics or materials sciences under the Next Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP). Candidates are encouraged to apply.

Main Objectives

Academics are responsible for disseminating knowledge (teaching and learning), creating knowledge (research), community engagement, and administrative, management, or leadership duties at various levels. They are also expected to contribute to their profession.

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in physics, specializing in solid state physics or materials sciences, with a focus on renewable energy. A PhD or significant progress towards a PhD in the same field is preferred.
  • Applications are welcomed in all areas of renewable energy, including energy conversion, resource characterization, energy storage, and materials characterization related to solar, wind, geothermal energy, or similar fields at Rhodes University.
  • Teaching, facilitation, or tutoring experience is required. Experience in teaching introductory physics, solid state physics, or materials science is advantageous.
  • No research supervision required.
  • An emerging record of research publications.
  • Some administrative experience, even if informal, such as involvement in student or sports clubs.

Remuneration

Grade L: Basic salary R633,149 per annum; Total cost to the university approximately R826,949 per annum.

Note: The position is advertised as permanent, but a fixed-term contract of at least three years may be offered. The university reserves the right not to fill the position. Employment checks will be conducted on selected candidates.
