The Department - Description Of The Department
The Department of Physics at Rhodes University is seeking to appoint a Lecturer with expertise in the area of solid state physics or materials sciences under the Next Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) and invites suitably qualified candidates to apply.
Main Objectives
All academics are responsible for disseminating knowledge (teaching and learning), creating knowledge (research) and community engagement, and recognising differences in executing these responsibilities within the various departments and Faculties. Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, faculty, and/or university levels and contribute to their profession.
The Requirements
- A Master’s degree in physics in the area of solid state physics or materials sciences, specialising in renewable energy. Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD or who have made significant progress towards a PhD in solid state physics, specialising in Renewable Energy.
- Applications will be considered in all areas of Renewable Energy, including Energy conversion, Resource characterisation, Energy storage, Experimental or Computational materials characterisation within the fields of Solar, Wind, Geothermal Energy or other areas whose research can reasonably be expected to be carried out at Rhodes University.
- Tutoring, facilitation, or teaching experience required. No teaching experience is required, but teaching experience in introductory physics, solid state physics or materials science will be an advantage.
- No research supervision required.
- Emerging track record of research publication
- Some administrative experience albeit in informal contexts e.g., student or sports clubs, work experiences.

Remuneration Per Annum (Grade L
Basic Pensionable Salary per annum: R633 149
Cost to Company per annum (Approximately): R826 949
