Job description

Applications are invited for the Network Engineer - Tier 3 position to be based in Pretoria.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

As a Network Engineer – Tier 3, you will work with both hardware and software to ensure the smooth operation of network systems. This includes installing and maintaining network components such as routers, switches, and data centre equipment. You will monitor and optimize core network performance and troubleshoot any issues that arise.

Key Performance Areas would include, but are not limited to:

  • Handling escalations from the helpdesk and field operations teams.
  • Configuring network equipment.
  • Escalating issues to the Team Leader, Herotel NOC, or Offnet providers as necessary.
  • Monitoring and troubleshooting all network systems.
  • Updating and maintaining accurate network documentation.
  • Requiting and assisting with or implementing approved change controls.
  • Managing and configuring IP addresses.
  • Performing maintenance on core systems and value-added services (VAS) products.
  • Compiling and submitting weekly reports.
  • Performing any ad hoc duties as required by business operations.
  • Being available for standby hours when necessary.

Key Outputs:

  • All escalated tickets from Helpdesk and Field Ops are handled within SLA.
  • Accurate configuration and deployment of network equipment
  • Clear and timely escalation to Team Leader, Herotel NOC, or Offnet providers, with detailed case documentation
  • Real-time alerts are responded to promptly, minimizing downtime and ensuring network reliability.
  • Network maps, IP schemas, and configuration records are consistently reviewed and maintained.
  • IP allocations are documented, and public/private IP spaces are optimized.
  • Reports include system health, ticket stats, and project updates, submitted on time.

The successful candidate must have the following experience/skills:

  • At least 3 years of network engineering experience.
  • Proficiency in TCP/IP, DNS, routers, IP routing, and switches.
  • Experience with OSPF, BGP, Switching IP routing, and complex Mikrotik configurations.
  • Strong reporting, communication, and administrative skills.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities.
  • Knowledge of Cisco, Juniper, and Arista systems is an advantage.
  • Experience in RF will be advantage.
  • Managing and implementing basic firewall and ACL.

Education Requirements:

  • Grade 12
  • Minimum: MTCNA certification.
  • Recommended: MTCRE certification.
  • Additional certifications such as N+ and A+ are advantageous.
