Job description

Our client, a prominent player in the supply chain and import/export industry, is seeking an experienced and dynamic National Commercial Manager. This senior management role will oversee the national commercial and supply chain portfolio across Durban, Cape Town, and Johannesburg. The ideal candidate will be tasked with driving commercial and business development, setting high standards, and achieving ambitious goals across multiple functional areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Commercial and Business Development:
  • Develop and execute commercial strategies to support the company's growth objectives.
  • Shape and steer the business for short, medium, and long-term success.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with key supply chain partners.
  • Identify and leverage commercial opportunities to enhance conversion rates.
  • Collaborate with supply chain partners to create a robust commercial model for both inbound and outbound cargo.
  • Leadership and Management:
    • Lead, mentor, and manage the commercial team to achieve set objectives.
    • Cultivate a culture of commercial excellence across all regions.
    • Oversee the commercial budget and manage costs effectively.
    • Facilitate clear communication with internal and external stakeholders, including board members, customers, and staff.
  • Strategic Planning:
    • Standardize commercial processes and practices across all regions.
    • Benchmark current commercial models against industry best practices and evolve as necessary.
    • Partner with the operations team to develop the company's Africa commercial strategy.
  • Operations:
    • Meet and exceed commercial goals and revenue targets.
    • Monitor commercial team performance using CRM tools.
    • Coordinate with external stakeholders, including rail and port authorities, to ensure efficient supply chain solutions.
    • Prepare, analyze, and present commercial performance reports monthly, quarterly, and annually.

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics/Supply Chain OR Sales and Marketing OR a related field.
    • Over 5 years of senior management or leadership experience.
    • Proven track record in commercial management, especially in warehousing, supply chain, logistics, and refined metal exports.
    • Experience with commodity exports/imports, refined metals, and supply chain operations in Africa.

    Skills and Knowledge:

    • Strong commercial and business development acumen.
    • Proficiency in strategic selling and understanding key business drivers.
    • Ability to negotiate long-term deals and anticipate market changes.
    • Excellent communication skills for engaging with stakeholders at all levels.
    • Demonstrated success in managing and growing business sales.
