Job summary

Old School Ties is seeking an experienced part-time Guitar teacher to commence in January 2027. The role involves teaching individual and small group guitar lessons to children aged 6–13, covering classical and contemporary styles, and preparing students for external exams.

You will also run a guitar ensemble and manage reports, attendance, and parent communications, including invoicing. The ideal candidate holds a B.Mus.

Qualifications

• B.Mus. or PGDip in performance required or preferred.
• PGCE advantageous and SACE registration required.
• Police clearance up-to-date.

Responsibilities

• Deliver individual and small group guitar lessons to learners aged 6–13.
• Cover beginner to intermediate repertoire, with emphasis on classical and contemporary styles.
• Lead a guitar ensemble and support concerts/events.
• Maintain music reports, attendance records, and parent communications including invoicing and exam entries.

Job description

We invite experienced and suitably qualified applicants to join our team of innovative music educators. We are looking for a part-time Guitar teacher, commencing in January 2027.

Requirements:

• A B.Mus. or PGDip in performance
• PGCE is advantageous
• Be registered with SACE
• Have up-to-date police clearance
• Previous teaching experience, ideally children between 6 and 13 years old
• The ability to read music, teach theory basics and make lessons engaging and age appropriate
• Technical ability on both acoustic and classical guitar is advantageous

The role:

• Teaching load: Individual lessons and small group lessons.
• Level and style: Beginner to intermediate, classical and contemporary, and working towards eisteddfods and external practical exams which is non-negotiable (e.g. Trinity, ABRSM, UNISA).
• Ensemble involvement: Running a guitar ensemble and taking part in concerts and events.
• Admin expectations: Music reports, attendance records, communication with parents which includes individual lessons invoicing, and any examination entries.

This is a part-time post and therefore will be paid by parents. There is no affiliation to our SGB.
