Job summary

Anglo American seeks a Mining Engineer to provide mine planning and design expertise, developing Mine Activity Designs (MAD) and deployment strategies to optimise production, safety and sustainable mining practices.

The role sits in the Technical & Integrated Planning department and reports to the Section Manager Mine Activity Design. Strong focus on design accuracy, stakeholder engagement and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • National Diploma in Mining Engineering or equivalent.
  • B Tech /Degree in Mining Engineering.
  • SA Drivers Licence.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain Mine Activity Designs (MAD) and ensure alignment with final pit designs and latest geological information.
  • Translate deployment strategies into graphical plans for operational understanding.
  • Monitor performance against MAD designs and suggest improvements.
  • Conduct regular site visits with Schedulers to verify alignment of planned vs actual deployment activities.

The purpose of this role is to provide mine planning and design expertise by developing and governing Mine Activity Designs and deployment strategies that optimise operational performance, support safe and sustainable mining practices, and deliver planned production outcomes..

We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Rosebank, Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

Job Description

As Mining Engineer your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

Safety, Health, and Environment:

  • Manage a safe and healthy work environment in which workers and contractors can deliver their outputs within a controlled risk environment.
  • Keep environmental impact within statutory requirements to ensure compliance with statutory requirements is met.

Develop and Maintain Mine Activity Designs:

  • Develop and maintain block designs within the area of responsibility in accordance with final pit designs, phase designs, and the latest geological information (MTM model).
  • Engage with relevant stakeholders to review and optimise block designs.
  • Identify infrastructure requirements necessary to support operational plans and deployment strategies.
  • Design and maintain infrastructure layouts in a 3D environment, including power reticulation, haul roads, intersections, ramps, and water reticulation systems.
  • Maintain and update Mine Activity Design (MAD) documentation, records, and meeting outcomes.
  • Apply approved planning and design parameters throughout the MAD process.

Support Planning and Deployment Execution:

  • Ensure mine activity designs and deployment strategies are current and aligned with the Operational Management System (OMS) and 12-Week Schedule.
  • Translate deployment strategies into graphical plans to support operational understanding and decision‑making.
  • Align deployment strategies with phase designs and ensure all design requirements are incorporated into execution plans.
  • Identify technical issues requiring input from other Technical Services disciplines and facilitate the appropriate support.
  • Conduct regular site visits with Schedulers to verify alignment between planned and actual deployment activities and identify future design requirements.

Monitor Performance and Recommend Improvements:

  • Monitor and analyse performance against approved MAD designs and planning targets.
  • Conduct reconciliation activities to identify variances between planned and actual performance.
  • Highlight deviations, identify risks and opportunities, and recommend corrective actions to improve performance.
  • Support the development and monitoring of recovery plans where performance falls below target.
  • Conduct quarterly MAD reconciliations between Mine Planning Design (MPD) and Mine Activity Design (MAD) outputs.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at optimising planning parameters, identifying mining bottlenecks, and improving area development practices.

Coordinate Stakeholder Engagement and Reporting:

  • Participate in and contribute to quarterly MAD review meetings with Mine Technical Services (MTS) and operational teams.
  • Prepare and present technical information and planning outputs to relevant stakeholders.
  • Escalate critical planning, design, or deployment issues that may impact operational performance.
  • Provide technical support and recommendations to ensure effective implementation of mine plans and deployment strategies.

This role is in Technical & Integrated Planning (T&IP) department on a Band 6 (D-Lower) level reporting to the Section Manager Mine Activity Design.

Qualifications
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • National Diploma in Mining Engineering or equivalent
  • B Tech /Degree in Mining Engineering
  • SA Drivers Licence

Technical Knowledge

  • 3-5 years of experience in production, load, haul operations, mine planning, and pit layout.
  • Strong understanding of mining engineering principles, including geology, geotechnical engineering, hydrogeology, and mineral processing.
  • Knowledge of relevant safety legislation (e.g., MHSA, Minerals and Energy Act).
  • Good understanding of Opencast Iron Ore Mining and Beneficiation Processes.
  • Good knowledge of Planning office and design software processes and methodologies.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations and sustainable mining practices.
  • Proficiency in mining methods (surface, underground, in-situ), equipment, and technology.
  • Proficient knowledge in project management and financial analysis.
  • An understanding of health, safety, and environmental stewardship principles.
