The role requires a background in mining or mechanical engineering with ventilation specialization, 5+ years in mine ventilation, and expertise in Ventsim or similar software. On-site work in Benoni is expected with opportunities for professional growth.

About the Role

Our client, a key player in the mining industry, is seeking a skilled Mine Ventilation Engineer to join their team in Benoni, Gauteng. This vital role focuses on designing, implementing, and managing mine ventilation systems to ensure optimal air quality, temperature, and safety conditions underground. The successful candidate will possess a strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and ventilation principles as applied to mining environments. You will be instrumental in maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for all personnel within the mine. This is a critical position within a major operation in the vibrant Gauteng province.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and optimize mine ventilation networks to ensure adequate airflow and dilution of contaminants.
• Conduct airflow measurements, analyze ventilation surveys, and identify areas for improvement in Benoni .
• Develop strategies for managing heat, dust, and noxious gases underground.
• Specify, select, and oversee the installation and maintenance of ventilation fans, ducting, and other equipment.
• Perform heat load calculations and design cooling systems where necessary.
• Ensure compliance with all South African mine ventilation regulations and safety standards.
• Collaborate with mine planning and operations teams to integrate ventilation requirements into mine designs.
• Investigate ventilation-related incidents and develop preventative measures.
• Prepare technical reports, budget proposals, and operational guidelines related to mine ventilation.
• Stay updated on advances in mine ventilation technology and best practices.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with a specialization in ventilation.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in mine ventilation engineering, preferably in underground mining.
• Strong knowledge of ventilation network modeling software (e.g., Ventsim, Ventsim Control).
• Proficiency in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and dust/gas dispersion modeling.
• Experience with heat transfer calculations and cooling system design is advantageous.
• Understanding of South African mine health and safety legislation, particularly regarding ventilation.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Good communication and report-writing abilities.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Willingness to work on-site in the Benoni area and occasionally underground.
