Job summary

A leading company in the titanium dioxide production sector is looking for skilled mechanical and electrical maintenance personnel for their Smelter operations in Saldanha. The position involves enhancing equipment performance, conducting both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Ideal candidates will have N2 qualifications and relevant trade experience in a heavy industrial environment. Preference is given to female candidates as part of their Employment Equity Policy.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of an N2 Qualification in Electrical Trade Theory.
  • Grade 12 Mathematics & Physical Science with a minimum E symbol.
  • At least 2 years post-trade experience in a heavy industry environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventative maintenance on production equipment.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain assets to minimize production impact.
  • Support maintenance during breakdowns and shutdowns.

Business Unit & Section: Namakwa Sands - Engineering

Primary Location: Smelter Operations (Saldanha)

Position Summary

This role supports the Smelter plant, including the CO Generation plant, performing first-line mechanical and electrical duties to improve plant reliability, enhance equipment performance, and minimize unplanned downtime. The position involves both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance across departments, requiring day/night shifts, overtime, and standby work. Effective teamwork is essential.

Qualification & Experience

  • Grade 12 Mathematics & Physical Science with a minimum E symbol or Technical N2 Mathematics & Science with a minimum E symbol
  • Minimum of an N2 Qualification in Electrical Trade Theory, Fitting & Machining Trade Theory, Electronics, or Engineering Drawings
  • Certified Trade Test Qualification
  • Valid code 08 (Code B) driver’s license
  • At least 2 years post-trade experience in a heavy industry environment

Knowledge & Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong problem-solving abilities
  • Experience in routine maintenance
  • Knowledge of 5S principles
  • Understanding of OHSA regulations & SANS standards
  • Knowledge of technical drawings (electrical, instrumentation, hydraulics)
  • Familiarity with Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
  • Knowledge of low & medium voltage operations, fault diagnosis, and repairs
  • Understanding of overhead cranes, hydraulic systems, and conveyor systems
  • Computer literacy and SAP proficiency

Job Responsibilities

  • Inspect, repair, and maintain assets and infrastructure to minimize production impact
  • Coordinate with plant personnel regarding breakdowns, spares, and equipment
  • Support maintenance during breakdowns and shutdowns
  • Perform preventative maintenance on production equipment
  • Conduct technical evaluations of equipment
  • Comply with Occupational Health and Safety Act and company SHE policies
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment
  • Collaborate with team members for efficient operations
  • Assist with technical investigations and RCFA’s
  • Identify safety defects and report to supervisors
  • Support operations of the CO Generation plant
  • Perform additional tasks as directed by the Supervisor
