Mid Level - Mechanical Design Engineer - Cape Town
The ideal candidate will create, draft, and design product layouts and schemes based on customer specifications and recommendations.
This individual will test products and make necessary adjustments.
Additionally, they will examine broken products and resolve issues to inform future designs.
Responsibilities
- Oversee multiple projects, including your own, and provide guidance.
- Mentor junior mechanical engineers and technicians.
- Maintain a high level of safety ethic and ensure a safe working environment.
- Initially, shadow Project & Mechanical Engineers, Field Service Technicians, and Subsea Engineers to gain a fundamental understanding of the design, operation, inspection, and repair of Capital Drilling Equipment, along with related processes and procedures.
- Conduct in-house development, including strength calculations (from first principles and FEA/Simulation when required), 3D CAD modeling and drawing using SolidWorks, and generation of manufacturing data packs (BOMs, QCPs, Works Instructions, Manuals), as well as vendor management during fabrication.
- Participate physically in inspection and maintenance processes to gain a fundamental understanding.
- Manage projects (Service, Repair, Manufacture, Design, CEM, Product) from inception to delivery, ensuring adherence to company policies and procedures. This includes quotation, project execution, procurement, logistics, resource planning, scheduling, reporting, inspection review, databook generation, oversight, manufacture, quality control, and project closeout.
- Provide expert technical advice to Technicians and coach new Technicians.
- Monitor compliance with applicable codes, practices, QC policies, procedures, and specifications.
- Perform detailed reporting, inspection report reviews, and regularly update management and customers on project progress.
- Review engineering deliverables and initiate corrective actions; draft new procedures as needed.
- Ensure safe work practices are followed at all times.
Skills
- Advanced knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Teams).
- Excellent written communication skills (email, technical reports, WhatsApp, etc.).
- Sound understanding of 3D CAD packages, especially SolidWorks.
- Knowledge of FEA software, particularly SolidWorks Simulation.
- Understanding of engineering calculation software like Mathcad or MATLAB.
- Exposure to ASME VIII, API, and Class Rules (ABS & DNV) related to design and manufacture.
- Understanding of fabrication, boiler making/welding, and precision machining.
Qualifications and Experience
- Mechanical Engineering degree or diploma.
- Two to six years of experience in a related engineering environment.
