Job Details

The Medical Laboratory Scientist / Technician (MLS / MLT) performs and monitors various medical laboratory analyses of patient specimens to provide accurate test results for confirming clinical diagnoses and treatment therapies.

The MLS / MLT complies with regulatory requirements by following established procedures and protocols to maintain a safe laboratory environment and meet accreditation standards.

The MLS / MLT works effectively as a team member within the department and with other departments to provide quality service through communication, cooperation, and collaboration.

Job Description
Essential Functions :
  1. Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
  2. Properly processes specimens following established protocols for proper patient identification and labeling.
  3. Performs specimen collection via phlebotomy and venipuncture at specific hospital locations as needed.
  4. Determines acceptability of specimens by performing visual inspections, including recognizing acceptable QC and identifying abnormal/unusual results.
  5. Documents unacceptable specimens according to appropriate policy.
  6. Communicates specimen requirements to appropriate personnel.
  7. Reports, documents, and communicates critical values per hospital policy.
  8. Maintains records and documentation of test results by entering and verifying data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  9. Operates analytical equipment for medical laboratory tests.
  10. Monitors, cleans, calibrates, and maintains devices and instruments according to manufacturer specifications and relevant standards.
  11. Troubleshoots malfunctions and initiates corrective actions.
  12. Keeps accurate records of all equipment checks and maintenance actions performed.
  13. Adheres to established quality control policies and procedures to ensure the accuracy and validity of laboratory results.
  14. Recognizes factors affecting measurements and takes appropriate action according to protocol.
  15. Follows QC protocols for all testing before releasing results.
  16. Documents quality control results in compliance with regulatory agencies.
  17. Participates in proficiency testing programs.
  18. Maintains clinical competency by fulfilling regulatory requirements annually.
  19. Participates in hospital/laboratory in-services for educational purposes and accreditation compliance.
  20. Performs other laboratory technician duties as assigned, including providing technical education and training to technicians and students as needed.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Associate's Degree required in a related field of Science, preferably from an accredited school of Medical Laboratory Technology or completion of Military Medical Laboratory specialist training.
  • Prior training in a laboratory setting (student training accepted).
  • ASCP or equivalent certification preferred.
