Job summary

Samancor Chrome in Middelburg is seeking a Maintenance Supervisor to lead safe, cost-effective mechanical plant maintenance, projects and shutdowns. You will supervise artisans and contractors to ensure high-quality workmanship while aligning maintenance with production priorities.

The role involves coordinating resources, enforcing SHEQ standards, and driving continuous improvement in maintenance practices in a hot, dusty mining environment.

Responsibilities

• Supervise maintenance planning and execution of mechanical plant equipment
• Oversee safety, cost control, and quality during maintenance and shutdowns
• Coordinate resources, contractor activities, and material requirements
• Review task lists, risk assessments, and permits for planned work
• Monitor performance against targets and implement corrective actions
• Ensure adherence to SHEQ standards and IMS procedures
• Provide feedback to production on maintenance progress and priorities
• Align maintenance activities with plant production goals and schedules
• Control costs and optimise maintenance spend to maximise plant availability
• Lead recruitment interviews and coach team members to improve performance
• Prepare and review schedules, Bill of Quantities and resource availability

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To supervise the safe and cost-effective execution of all mechanical plant equipment, maintenance, modifications, and projects including facilities and planned shutdown work thereby ensuring high-quality workmanship of artisans and contractors

JOB RESPONSIBILITY

SAFETY, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT AND QUALITY

• Identify and assess level of continuous risk exposures in area of responsibility by considering exposures to business, financial, legal issues, people, equipment, material, environment, processes, etc.
• Consider the level of risk, apply mitigation and implement control measures for residual risk (set objectives, minimum requirements, etc.)
• Ensure SHEQ compliance within the Team through effective use of the Toolbox
• Utilise the Integrated Management System (IMS) to initiate, investigate and report SHEQ status

PEOPLE

Supervise The Team

• Ensure an enabling climate/culture
• Maintain labour stability by minimising labour turnover
• Manage performance against set targets and competencies
  • Ensure IDP’s are linked to performance results and implemented as per plan
• Conduct career discussions and implement actions with all identified talent (quarterly)
• Ensure discipline is maintained (absenteeism, lateness, overtime, misconduct, etc.)
• Coach and counsel people to ensure improved performance levels
• Conduct recruitment interviews

CUSTOMERS

• Ensure Customer Satisfaction through proper customer service
• Mobilise resources to attend to plant stoppages as quickly and safely as possible
• Provide constant feedback to the plant production personnel with regards to the progress of any maintenance work on the plant
• Align the maintenance effort with plant production priorities

Unplanned Interventions

• Prioritise breakdown and authorize work

Maintenance Support

• Initiate root cause failure analysis
• Provide feedback on pro-active identification of problem to originator
• Record issues surrounding problems
• Assure sustainability of solutions

Schedule Preparation

• Assess notification details and scope of work to ensure the scope of work meets the required standard
• Review Bill of Quantities
• Prioritise Jobs/Forward Workload
• Provide Resources Availability to the Maintenance Practitioner (Planning)

Work Execution

• Reallocate resources and postpone jobs if necessary
• Perform over inspection
• Manage materials if work order is postponed
• Ensure quality of work completed
• Check confirmations
• Support the Maintenance Practitioner Planning to technically complete work orders on a routine basis.
• SAP PM and SAP HR System work
• Conduct risk assessment and issue permits for work to be done
• Be prepared to work in a hot and dusty environment

Work Analysis

• Monitor and ensure strict adherence to maintenance work management principles (percent planned work, adherence of schedule, number of breakdowns, number of proactive requests) to obtain maximum plant availability at minimum maintenance cost per unit produced.

Contractor Management

• Optimise manning plan through the use of internal or contractor artisans for unplanned work
• Manage contractor activities on site
• Physically accept and document acceptance of work
• Verify quantities involved in contractor work
• Record contractor non-conformance
• Sign invoice, timesheets, or pro-forma

Rotables Management

• Decide whether item can be repaired based on initial visual inspection
• Complete all fields on the "Damage" tag on the return item or rotable store
• TECO original PM01 order and complete notification

SHAREHOLDER VALUE

• Monitor and control section costs
• Control Maintenance cost
