Job description

A dynamic East Rand-based precious metals refinery is seeking a skilled Melter to join its team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the precision melting of precious metals using induction furnaces and established pyrometallurgical techniques. This critical role ensures product quality, safety compliance, and efficient operations within the refinery process. Candidates with a relevant technical qualification (e.g., metallurgy, engineering, foundry operations) are preferred, and practical experience is essential. Applicants must demonstrate a strong understanding of pyrometallurgical principles and fluxing processes, excellent safety awareness, and a readiness to work shifts, over and under pressure in high-temperature environments.

Requirements :

  • A relevant technical qualification (e.g., metallurgy, engineering, foundry operations)
  • 2–3 years’ experience in a melting or metal refining environment.
  • Experience operating induction furnaces is essential.
  • Strong understanding of pyrometallurgical principles and fluxing processes.
  • Excellent safety awareness with a clear understanding of operational risks and hazards.
  • Practical, hands-on ability to work with hot materials and heavy-duty equipment.
  • Reliability & Responsibility – Shows accountability in handling precious metals and equipment, with consistent punctuality and dependability
  • Work Ethic – Demonstrates dedication, discipline, and a proactive attitude toward tasks and responsibilities.
  • Physically fit and able to work in high-temperature environments.
  • Willingness to work shifts and under pressure as needed.
  • Clear Criminal Record

Duties :

  • Operate and monitor induction furnaces for melting gold, silver, and other precious metals.
  • Apply fluxing techniques and understand the chemistry of pyrometallurgical processes.
  • Ensure all melting operations comply with Health & Safety protocols, including proper use of PPE and awareness of environmental and operational hazards.
  • Handle molten metal safely and accurately, minimizing loss and maintaining purity standards.
  • Prepare and charge material into the furnace according to standard operating procedures.
  • Perform routine equipment inspections and minor maintenance to ensure reliable operation.
  • Record detailed process data, including weights, temperature ranges, flux ratios, and batch outcomes.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues in refining, assay, and casting teams to ensure seamless production flow.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and training programs.
  • Perform other duties as required by the business, even if not specifically listed in the job description.
