Qualifications

• MBChB degree or equivalent recognised medical qualification.
• Current HPCSA registration to practise independently.
• Emergency medicine training and certifications: ATLS, ACLS, APLS or PALS.
• Strong clinical assessment, communication and decision‑making skills.
• Ability to work under pressure in a busy Emergency Centre.

Responsibilities

• Provide professional, ethical, patient‑centred medical care in the Emergency Centre.
• Assess, diagnose, stabilise and manage patients with a range of emergency conditions.
• Manage patients admitted under the Emergency Centre during assigned day shifts where applicable.
• Review and interpret investigations and ensure appropriate follow-up.
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation and comply with protocols.
• Collaborate with medical staff, nursing and other healthcare professionals.
• Honour all shifts and communicate scheduling concerns promptly.
• Participate in clinical meetings and CME activities as required.
• Maintain current emergency medicine knowledge and life-support certifications.
• Undertake second-on-call duties as rostered.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide professional, ethical and patient-centred medical care in the Emergency Centre.
• Assess, diagnose, stabilise and manage patients presenting with a wide range of emergency medical conditions.
• Manage patients admitted under the Emergency Centre during assigned day shifts, where applicable.
• Review and interpret investigation results, including blood tests, cultures and radiological imaging, and ensure appropriate follow-up.
• Maintain accurate clinical documentation and comply with established clinical protocols and practice procedures.
• Work collaboratively with fellow medical practitioners, nursing staff and other healthcare professionals to ensure effective patient management.
• Honour all accepted and rostered shifts and communicate any scheduling concerns timeously.
• Participate in departmental clinical meetings and continuing medical education activities, where required.
• Maintain current emergency medicine knowledge and the relevant life-support certifications.
• Undertake second-on-call duties as required and agreed upon in the roster.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• MBChB degree or an equivalent recognised medical qualification.
• Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), with the appropriate registration status to practise independently.
• Relevant emergency medicine training and certifications, such as:
• Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
• Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) or Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
• Strong clinical assessment, communication and decision-making skills.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure in a busy Emergency Centre.
• A professional, reliable and patient-focused approach to medical practice.

Candidates must ensure that their relevant emergency medicine courses and certifications are valid and up to date by the commencement date of 1 December 2026.
