We’re on the lookout for experienced Mechanical Technicians to assist the Maintenance Engineer and Foremen by carrying out legal compliance inspections under the OHS Act, various mechanical project work, maintenance tasks, technical investigations, and management tasks.

As a Mechanical Technician, you will be responsible for:

  1. Drawing up/updating technical specifications/procedures, Capital and Renewal applications, and enquiry documents.
  2. Adjudicating quotations and participating in the selection of contractors.
  3. Managing Capital and Renewal projects.
  4. Updating plant mechanical drawings in consultation with plant Foremen.
  5. Carrying out technical investigations/feasibility studies, investigating maintenance problems, and producing reports with recommendations and changes to maintenance plans.
  6. Providing specialist maintenance skills (SME - Subject Matter Expert) for specific plant and equipment areas where basic mechanical skills are lacking.
  7. Fault finding on plant and equipment not performing to OEM specifications.
  8. Fault finding related to plant and equipment causing production stoppages or reduced throughput.
  9. Working independently while keeping the Engineer fully informed as necessary.
  10. Assisting with plant breakdowns, supporting plant Foremen, managing sections, and performing standby duties.
  11. Coordinating statutory inspections (e.g., structural, pressure vessel, pressurized systems).
  12. Observing company safety policies and procedures under the OHS Act and IRCA standards.
  13. Utilizing all Sappi systems in executing maintenance strategies and achieving objectives.
  14. Assisting the Maintenance Engineer with preparing the maintenance budget.
  15. Executing work during plant shuts and supervising during these periods.
  16. Investigating root causes of frequent failures or high-cost maintenance and implementing solutions.
  17. Identifying and executing cost-saving projects.
  18. Performing plant inspections and lockout audits.
  19. Reviewing and optimizing existing maintenance schedules.
  20. Developing maintenance schedules for newly installed equipment.
  21. Developing best practices and QCPs for maintenance activities.
  22. Performing Mill-wide Mechanical Technician standby duties as required.

  • NQF6: N. Diploma / NH Dip. Mechanical Engineering.
  • 3-5 Years of practical experience.
  • Pulp and Paper Industry experience is advantageous.
