Job description

Our client, based in George, Western Cape , is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Engineer to join their team on a world-changing mission.

As a key contributor, you will help develop advanced forestry planting equipment aimed at transforming the global forestry industry. This role is perfect for someone passionate about technology development, who thrives under pressure and enjoys overcoming challenges in a collaborative and fast-paced development environment.

Requirements :

• Minimum of 5 years' experience in the design and development of complex, multi-disciplinary systems. Design experience in forestry and / or agricultural equipment will be regarded as a huge advantage.
• Extensive experience in Autodesk Inventor.
• Proven track record in the development and manufacturing of specialized engineering projects in a light fabrication manufacturing environment with an excellent grasp of welding.
• Experience of conceptual and detailed design of equipment, sub-components, machined components, sheet metal design, weldments & assemblies.
• Ability to generate detailed manufacturing drawings, BOMs and assembly instructions
• Strong project management skills with a proven ability to deliver complex engineering projects on time and within budget.
• Experience in hydraulic system design advantageous
• Experience in electrical control systems interfaces advantageous
• Good understanding of the systems engineering process
• Knowledge of the Integrated Product Development Process in complex engineering projects.
• Good technical report writing skills
• Travelling locally and internationally

Key Responsibilities :

• Product Design , Development and Manufacturing : Participating in concept design development, design, build, and test mechanical systems for forestry equipment, focusing on performance to specification, manufacturability, reliability, and cost-efficiency.
• Documentation : Produce detailed engineering documentation, including CAD models (Autodesk Inventor), technical drawings, BOMs, project reports, quality documentation, specifications, etc.
• Collaboration : Work closely with partner companies and cross-functional teams, including electrical, software, manufacturing, and sales, to ensure that the end product meets both technical and commercial objectives.
• Project Management : Manage engineering projects from concept through production, ensuring timely delivery while staying within budget.
• Manufacturing and assembly support : Assist manufacturing and assembly teams and partners in solving technical challenges related to fabrication.
• Continuous Improvement : Identify opportunities for product performance enhancements, reliability improvements, and cost reductions through technical innovation.

Education :

• BEng Mechanical. An equivalent degree in Mechatronics will also be considered.
• Postgraduate qualification is advantageous.

Soft Skills :

• High emotional intelligence (EQ), excellent communication, and strong organizational skills.
• Self-starter with strong problem-solving skills, able to anticipate needs, identify roadblocks, and proactively address challenges with innovation and empathy.
• Collaborative mindset with a willingness to work closely with others in pursuit of the best solutions.
