We are seeking a detail-oriented Mechanical Draughtsperson to join our dynamic engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing 2D and 3D designs of water and process treatment plants using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD, working closely with engineers, technicians, and workshop staff to create high-quality designs that work and are well presented for manufacturing.
This role is crucial in transforming conceptual hand-drawn designs into accurate and buildable drawings while ensuring that all designs adhere to company standards and support production efficiency. This task requires a high level of competency and attention to detail in designing the physical plant by considering how it will be built, the cost of materials, what stock is available, the functionality of the system, and the equipment required to build. Teamwork and communication skills are essential, as the candidate will be working with several different people to create the design.
Key responsibilities
Communicating with the engineering team, technical manager, technicians, and workshop manager, and then producing General Arrangement (G.A.) drawings which present the design for manufacturing.
Use Autodesk AutoCAD to assist the process and project engineers with Process and Instrumentation Drawings (P&ID’s).
Responsible for creating, maintaining, and storing G.A. and P&ID drawings for standard products sold by the company.
The mechanical draftsman is responsible for building, maintaining, and backing up the CAD parts library.
Maintain and improve company drawing standards, including templates, symbols, and revision procedures.
Build, manage, and back up the CAD parts library to ensure efficient design workflows.
Conduct basic mechanical design calculations for key structural components where required.
Ensure all deliverables meet cost, material availability, functionality, and manufacturability requirements.
Stay up to date with the latest CAD technologies and implement improvements where beneficial.
Education and experience required
Matric
Relevant tertiary qualification, relevant courses in Autodesk products completed
1-4 years’ experience with water treatment technologies
1-4 years’ experience with 3D modelling using Autodesk Inventor
Experience with Autodesk Plant3D, Vault, 3Ds max, or Navisworks Manage is beneficial.
A membership of an appropriate professional body will be advantageous
