About the Role

Our client is a leading manufacturer of specialized heavy equipment for the mining industry. We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team in Mahikeng, North West. This role focuses on the design, development, and improvement of robust and reliable machinery essential for modern mining operations. You will work on projects ranging from component design to complete system integration, ensuring our equipment meets the demanding requirements of the mining sector. The hybrid work arrangement offers a blend of collaborative on-site design sessions and focused remote work for analysis and documentation, providing flexibility while maintaining project momentum.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical components, sub-systems, and complete machinery for mining applications using advanced CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor).
• Perform detailed structural, kinematic, and dynamic analyses using FEA and other simulation tools.
• Create comprehensive manufacturing drawings, assembly instructions, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
• Specify materials, components, and manufacturing processes suitable for harsh mining environments.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, testing, and product support, to ensure design feasibility and product quality.
• Conduct design reviews, identify potential risks, and implement mitigation strategies.
• Support prototype development, testing, and validation efforts.
• Investigate and resolve design-related issues encountered in production or in the field.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of design methodologies and tools.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum of 6 years of experience in mechanical design, with a significant focus on heavy mobile equipment or mining machinery.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks or Inventor preferred) and FEA analysis tools.
• Strong understanding of structural mechanics, material science, hydraulics, and power transmission systems.
• Experience designing for durability and reliability in extreme operating conditions.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a team and independently.
• Familiarity with mining industry standards and regulations is advantageous.
• Experience with electromechanical systems is a plus.
