Job description

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer for a permanent role based in Boksburg, Gauteng

Applicants are required to meet the following criteria:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering and registered as a professional engineer with relevant experience in the pump industry
  • Good general knowledge of pump application, mechanical and hydraulic loading, engineering concepts
  • Knowledge of material strengths, fits and tolerances
  • Hands-on experience with design, engineering and/or fabrication of pump components
  • Good experience with and willing to conceptualise designs using CAD packages
  • Sound knowledge of Metallurgy
  • Experience on Vault ERP System experience
  • Proficient computer skills as well as: Autodesk packages, Product Design & Manufacturing: CAD Software, Autodesk Inventor, 3ds max, Navisworks, Vault, Fusion S
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a creative approach for generating new ideas
  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in mechanical design and fabrication detailing

The successful applicant would be responsible for, but not limited to:


  • Create new designs where necessary, complete with cutting lists and machining/fabrication drawings
  • Review customer and sales problems/requests, to evaluate and provide technical solutions to product performance in the field
  • Review manufacturing drawings and work closely with the production team to provide technical support during the manufacturing and assembly process, including troubleshooting and problem-solving as needed
  • Assist the Sales Department with new designs or adjustments to existing designs for baseplates, vertical pumps, pontoons, walkaways and tanks
  • Provide technical support to the sales department on new products
  • Comply with all the design requirements according to customer specifications, industry and engineering standards
  • Provide engineering calculations : Load analysis, material stress, fluid dynamics, Centre of gravity
  • Identify material requirements and provide assistance with the BOM’s generated and verify the BOM’s per job file received
  • Select appropriate materials and components for designs, considering factors such as cost, durability, and availability
  • Be responsible for the support of the assembly process to ensure that all contractual technical requirements are met
  • The candidate shall identify assembly methods and/or develop new assembly methods if required and resolve any problems encountered during the assembly process
  • Able to interpret engineering drawings, assist machine-shops and fabricators with machine-setup & interpretation of drawings
  • Work together with the Quality department to interpret drawings and identify/resolve Non-Conformances
  • Responsible to ensure adherence to ISO quality standards and procedures of record keeping and maintenance of drawing register, traceability, Drawing Revision Management
  • The candidate shall ensure that the machine shops are updated with new drawing revision numbers, that the company records (vault files) are updated with new drawing revision numbers and that Bluebox (ERP System) (BOM’s) are updated with new drawing revision numbers
  • Participate in design meetings with Technical sales, QA & the planning department
  • Technical handovers, internally and externally
  • Analyse the full scope of supply, bills of materials and other project documentation
  • Evaluate machine-shop and fabricator abilities and capacities, and provide feedback to procurement to improve lead times, cost management and quality
  • Liaises with customers and suppliers as required

Salary: R70000 – R80000 per month basic salary with a 3-month probation period
