Material Testers - Civil Engineering Lab (Various Sites)

SGS South Africa, Matrocast Division, is seeking to fill a role in its Civil Engineering Site Laboratories in the Western Cape Region. The role includes assisting the Supervisor/Laboratory Manager with all tasks, whether on site or in the laboratory. Responsibilities include cleaning equipment regularly, preparing materials for testing (soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, aggregate), and ensuring the laboratory remains clean. The Materials Tester will follow work instructions from technicians/supervisors or authorized personnel.

The ideal candidate will possess integrity, good interpersonal skills, energy, and passion to maintain good staff relationships. The role requires delivering performance against strategic objectives, ensuring quality and testing methods are observed, and reporting deviations promptly.

Reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor/Laboratory Manager, the Materials Tester will:

• Clean equipment regularly and after each job, ensuring work areas are tidy and consumables are accounted for.
• Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
• Report deviations, irregularities, and non-conformances orally.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by the site supervisor/laboratory manager and regional manager.
• Follow all procedures and report deviations promptly.
• Complete timesheets accurately daily.

Minimum qualifications and skills include:

• Grade 12
• Proven laboratory knowledge, skills, and experience recognized through Recognition of Prior Learning.
• Familiarity with the latest Civil Engineering Testing Methods (e.g., TMH 1, SANS).
• Proficiency in English and Afrikaans (reading, writing, speaking).
• Experience in sampling and preparation.
• Administration experience is advantageous.
• Punctuality and physical fitness to handle samples safely.
