About the Role:

We are seeking a dedicated and detail oriented Material Controller to manage materials within our structural steel fabrication facility in South Africa. Your primary role will involve overseeing the identification, verification, and traceability of structural steel sections, ensuring they meet quality standards and are readily available for production. Your exceptional attention to detail, technical knowledge of steel materials, and strong organisational skills will be essential in maintaining accurate records, supporting seamless fabrication processes, optimising workflow, and preventing any disruptions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Material Identification: Accurately identify and classify incoming structural steel sections according to South African standards, verifying dimensions, grades, and compliance upon receipt.
• Certificate Management: Record and maintain, material certificates, and traceability documentation both physically on delivery notes and electronically to ensure full audit compliance and backward traceability.
• Inventory Control: Monitor material stock levels, conduct inspections, stock takes, and manage the controlled issuance of materials to the production floor to minimise waste and support efficient workflows.
• Quality Assurance: Inspect materials for quality and discrepancies, reporting issues immediately to avoid production delays, and quarantine non-conforming items.
• Documentation: Update inventory systems with accurate records of material movements and locations, including receipts, issuances, and returns from production.
• Production Support: Coordinate with fabrication teams and procurement teams, resolve issues proactively, and ensure timely material availability for uninterrupted workshop operations.
• Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols when handling or storing heavy steel.

Requirements:

• Proven experience as a Material Controller in the structural steel fabrication industry in South Africa.
• Ability to read and interpret picking lists and cutting schedules.
• In depth knowledge of local structural steel sections, grades and handling requirements.
• Strong ability to identify steel profiles and manage material certificates with precision.
• Excellent organizational skills with the capacity to multitask and prioritise in a fast-paced environment.
• Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accurate record-keeping.
• Good communication skills for coordinating with teams and raising timely warnings.
• Physical stamina for handling multiple tasks at the same time and working in a fabrication yard.
• Proficiency with inventory management software and basic computer skills.
