Managing Counsel – Mining (Admitted Attorney)

Overview: The Managing Counsel plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the organisation's legal interests within the mining sector. This position oversees legal cases, drafts critical documents, and manages transactions to mitigate risks and ensure compliance with industry regulations. Leading a team of legal professionals, the role requires expert advisory skills in corporate governance, commercial law, and regulatory compliance while collaborating with key stakeholders to achieve business objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Legal Advisory & Strategy: Develop and execute legal strategies that align with business goals, mitigate risks, and ensure regulatory compliance.
- Compliance & Risk Management: Conduct risk assessments, manage audits, and implement preventative legal measures to safeguard operations.
- Contract Management & Negotiation: Oversee key agreements, contract drafting, dispute resolutions, and litigation strategies.
- Leadership & Team Development: Manage and mentor a team of legal professionals, fostering a high-performance culture and strategic legal insight.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with internal teams and external counsel to support governance structures and maintain positive legal relationships.
- Policy & Regulatory Oversight: Ensure adherence to legal policies, industry regulations, and updates to legislative frameworks impacting mining operations.
- Ethics & Sustainability: Advocate for ESG-related legal aspects while promoting ethical business practices and corporate responsibility.
- Reporting & Team Structure: Reports to: Vice President Legal Operations; Direct Reports: 2 Senior Legal Counsel & 1 Paralegal.
Qualifications & Experience:
- LLB or equivalent qualification, admitted to practice law.
- Minimum 10 years in corporate, commercial, or regulatory law within mining or a similarly regulated industry.
- Extensive knowledge of legal frameworks, contract negotiation, governance policies, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Proven leadership in managing teams and complex legal matters.
- Familiarity with key mining-related laws and regulations, including the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, Environmental Laws, and socio-economic empowerment charters.
- Strong analytical, negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Strategic mindset with high ethical standards.
