About this role

The Tax Manager will oversee all direct and indirect tax matters of the company, ensuring compliance with South African tax legislation, optimizing tax efficiency across the business, and supporting the company’s renewable energy projects. The ideal candidate will also identify and manage opportunities relating to government incentive programmes, grants, and rebates to support project development and expansion.

Duties and responsibilities

Direct Tax Management

  • Manage corporate income tax compliance, including submissions and payments to SARS.
  • Prepare and review tax calculations for annual financial statements and quarterly forecasts.
  • Manage deferred tax calculations and reporting.
  • Provide tax input into corporate structuring, mergers, acquisitions, and new project SPVs.
  • Liaise with external tax advisors and auditors.

Indirect Tax (VAT, Customs, Duties)

  • Ensure timely and accurate VAT submissions and compliance with VAT Act requirements.
  • Manage customs duties, import/export tax implications, and environmental levies applicable to equipment and components.
  • Provide guidance on VAT structuring for projects, particularly for cross-border transactions and EPC contracts.
  • Monitor legislative changes and ensure implementation of changes in the business.

Tax Risk Management & Compliance

  • Maintain up-to-date tax compliance records and manage SARS queries, audits, and disputes.
  • Identify and manage tax risks and opportunities, ensuring alignment with business strategies.
  • Ensure transfer pricing documentation and intercompany policies are in place and compliant.

Government Incentives & Grants

  • Identify and evaluate government tax incentives, rebates, and grant programmes relevant to renewable energy projects (e.g., Section 12B, Section 12L, DTIC incentives, REIPPPP-related benefits).
  • Support the application process for incentive programmes and maintain compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Liaise with government departments and advisors to monitor opportunities and legislative developments.

Advisory & Strategic Support

  • Support project development teams with tax structuring advice for bids, financial models, and PPAs.
  • Advise on tax implications of Power Purchase Agreements, EPC contracts, and O&M agreements.
  • Contribute to strategic decisions by evaluating tax impacts on commercial transactions.

Required skills and education background

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Tax, Finance, or related field (required).
  • Postgraduate Tax qualification or HDip Tax (advantageous).
  • Registered Tax Practitioner with SARS (required).
  • Minimum 5–8 years’ experience in a tax-focused role (in-house or professional services).
  • Renewable energy, infrastructure, or large capital project experience is advantageous.
  • Experience with SARS eFiling, e@syFile, and related systems.
  • Strong technical knowledge of South African tax legislation, including VAT, Income Tax, and customs.
  • Working knowledge of government incentive programmes, grants, and tax-based rebates.
  • High attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills (internal and external).
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

Additional Information
