Experience, knowledge & skills required

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent NQF Level 7 qualification in general insurance.
  • 3 – 8 years experience in technical underwriting or product development.
  • 3 – 8 years of experience in leading a team of specialist underwriters, with a proven track record of success in developing high-performing teams.
  • Understanding of tech enablers and emerging underwriting trends is an advantage.

Manages several underwriting professionals. Reviews and ensures conformance with underwriting policies, guidelines, and procedures by subordinate underwriters. Recommends changes in underwriting policies and procedures. Underwrites large or complex risks or provides final approval for those underwritten by subordinates.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Underwriting Insurance Cases: Act as a technical referral point for the team, providing guidance on underwriting complex and unusual cases and leading decisions related to high-value and complex risks to ensure insurance contracts are constructed within acceptable commercial and risk parameters.
  2. Underwriting Automation: Evaluate new or existing automated underwriting processes and systems, proposing new or improved functionalities to reduce costs and/or enhance underwriting effectiveness.
  3. Organizational Risk Management: Develop and/or deliver contingency plans for significant aspects of risk management and control processes.
  4. Regulatory and Compliance Management: Help design and implement a compliance program, liaising with regulators to ensure adherence to standards. This may involve supervising a regulatory/compliance team.
  5. Leadership and Direction: Communicate actions needed to implement the function's strategy and business plan, motivate the team, and align with the organization’s mission, vision, and values.
  6. Performance Management: Manage and report on team performance, set objectives, and take corrective actions as necessary.
  7. Budgeting: Develop and deliver budget plans with guidance from senior colleagues.
  8. Document Preparation: Write and edit material tailored to target audiences.
  9. Financial Policies, Guidelines, and Protocols: Ensure compliance with regulations and good financial practices.
  10. Organizational Capability Building: Identify development needs, plan, and implement actions, including professional development and coaching.
