Job summary

ECG Engineering Pty Ltd in Cape Town seeks an experienced Manager Commercial & Legal to lead ECG’s commercial and legal function across our international operations. This role provides direct exposure to senior leaders, project teams, finance and operations.

You will negotiate strong commercial outcomes, manage contractual risk, and navigate complex claims, disputes and strategic opportunities. You will influence contract strategy and support acquisitions and partnerships.

Qualifications

• Minimum five years post-admission experience in commercial law and drafting/negotiating complex contracts.
• Commercial experience in engineering, construction, resources or project delivery.
• Ability to translate complex legal issues into clear business advice and guide senior leaders.

Responsibilities

• Lead the review, drafting and negotiation of client, supplier, subcontractor and other commercial agreements
• Advise on contract structures, pricing, liabilities, indemnities, insurance, variations, claims and dispute resolution
• Partner with project, operational, finance and executive teams to identify commercial and legal risks early
• Review material tender terms, qualifications and commercial proposals and provide clear recommendations before submission
• Lead significant commercial negotiations and coordinate ECG’s response to material claims and disputes
• Support contract handover so project teams understand key obligations, milestones, notice requirements and commercial risks
• Advise on acquisitions, partnerships and strategic transactions, including due diligence, transaction documents and external legal support

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Manager Commercial & Legal to lead ECG’s commercial and legal function across our international operations.

This is a business-facing role with direct exposure to senior leaders, project teams, finance and operations.

You will be involved early in the decisions that matter, helping ECG negotiate strong commercial outcomes, manage contractual risk and navigate complex claims, disputes and strategic opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the review, drafting and negotiation of client, supplier, subcontractor and other commercial agreements

What You’ll Bring

• A Law Degree and admission to practise
• A current practising certificate where required
• At least five years of post-admission experience in commercial law, including drafting and negotiating complex contracts
• Commercial experience within engineering, construction, resources or project delivery
• Strong capability across contract risk, claims, disputes and commercial negotiations
• Experience advising senior operational and business leaders and managing external legal advisers
• Practical commercial judgement and the ability to translate complex legal issues into clear business advice
