We’re looking for an experienced Management Forester to plan, execute, and achieve operational estate management, harvesting objectives, and targets for fibre production within resource and SHEQ parameters to ensure a sustainable and low-cost fibre supply to Sappi mills and external customers.
As a Management Forester, you will be responsible for:
- Building, maintaining, and reinforcing a “predict and prevent” safety culture in all integrated operations.
- Regularly inspecting operations to identify risks and ensuring timely action (blanking & pest control, coppice management).
- Planning and conducting regular field inspections to ensure crops, through the timing of operations (weed control, pest & disease management), achieve maximum yields within cost constraints.
- Ensuring plantations use the Fire Risk Management System (FRMS) to identify risks, recording, and implementing fire control procedures to effectively protect people, plantations, and assets from forest fires.
- Developing a tactical plan and ensuring that the annual plan of operations for both commercial and open areas complies with standards and service level agreements.
- Developing a pre-harvest plan per compartment in collaboration with the Contractor and Silviculture.
- Conducting risk assessments per compartment to mitigate potential risks.
- Managing the harvesting budget effectively by ensuring sales target tons per day are achieved.
- Compiling, in conjunction with the Roads Engineer, an annual tactical road maintenance plan.
- Scheduling short-haul and loading operations to ensure timely rail/road transport.
- Maintaining and managing company assets such as buildings, villages, and houses according to standards and within budget.
- Maintaining effective relations with communities and internal/external stakeholders to uphold the company image, mitigate risks, and enhance relationships.
What are we looking for?
- National Diploma in Forestry or a related qualification.
- Minimum of three years of relevant experience.
- Valid driver’s license.
