Job Description
Job Title: Maintenance Technician
Location: Johannesburg, South Africa
Reporting to: Technical Manager
Shift Pattern: 3-shift rotation, 5 days per week (overtime and standby may be required)
Purpose of the Role
The Maintenance Technician is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of production and card personalisation equipment through preventative and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, and technical support. The role requires flexibility to work across shifts and occasional overtime, ensuring that machines operate efficiently, safely, and in compliance with quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Diagnose and repair issues with machinery, both mechanical and electronic, including escalation of complex issues when required.
- Perform high-quality preventative and emergency maintenance on production and card personalisation equipment.
- Troubleshoot, maintain, and service all operations equipment including Entrust MX6100, Matica S5200LX, MPR3000 machines, industrial shrink wrappers, industrial shredders, embossers, laminators, and related systems.
- Carry out day-to-day repairs such as: cleaning rollers, sensors, cavities, and other key components; calibrating sensors, data read / write devices, and application pressures; evaluating and replacing worn or misaligned parts (servo & stepper motors, spindles, clutches, belts, bearings, etc.); evaluating and replacing temperature, proximity, and position software adjustments for temperature, hardware positioning, and other performance factors.
- Utilise diagnostic tools (voltmeters, laptops, test equipment) and follow repair manuals to troubleshoot and resolve card printer system issues.
- Perform machine testing, calibration, and quality assurance checks before client delivery.
Production Support and Operations
- Adjust equipment settings to ensure quality production output.
- Ensure operational targets are achieved by keeping machines in optimal condition and resolving issues proactively.
- Maintain accurate production and maintenance documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Provide technical support and guidance to operators, assisting with troubleshooting and machine adjustments as required.
- Train machine operators on equipment use, preventative care, and health and safety best practices.
- Collaborate with production teams to align maintenance activities with production schedules.
Inventory and Documentation
- Maintain accurate inventory levels of spare parts, tools, and consumables, ensuring timely replenishment.
- Keep detailed service records, including maintenance logs, repair history, and parts used.
- Follow established processes for service activity reporting, call management, and compliance requirements.
Safety and Compliance
- Conduct health and safety checks to ensure all machinery is safe for operation.
- Follow strict HSEQ protocols, ISO IMS procedures, and site workshop regulations at all times.
- Ensure compliance with GSMA SAS and PCI Standards.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and well-stocked workspace to promote safety and efficiency.
Flexibility and Additional Duties
- Work in a 3-shift rotation, 5 days per week, with flexibility to work overtime when required.
- Be available for standby duty and respond to urgent service requests as necessary.
- Accept and execute project assignments as directed by management.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and provide feedback on maintenance processes and equipment performance.
Qualifications
- S2, NTC4, or applicable trade test qualification (or equivalent).
- Minimum 3–5 years of technical experience in equipment repair, installation, and maintenance.
- Proven background in a manufacturing or production environment.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical and integrated electronic (mechatronic) principles.
- Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, service manuals, and hand tools.
- PC literacy with the ability to work with service software and reporting tools.
