Job summary

The University of the Western Cape is seeking several Library Assistants to support teaching and research initiatives. The successful candidates will play a key role in enhancing user services, cataloguing, and collection maintenance at the Main Campus library, contributing to an enriching academic environment. Ideal candidates will hold a Bachelor's in Library & Information Science and possess some library experience.

Qualifications

  • Minimum one year’s working experience in a library, preferably academic or research setting.
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently.

Responsibilities

  • Perform library user services duties, e.g., Circulation, Short loans, ILL.
  • Support to research services and perform virtual & in-person reference services.

The primary role of the Library Assistant is to support library learning, teaching and research activities, particularly those related to open science, virtual reference and user services.

Main Duties And Responsibilities Include

  • Perform library user services duties i.e. Circulation; Short loans; ILL etc
  • Perform basic cataloguing & databases searches
  • Provide support to research services
  • Perform virtual & in-person reference services
  • Collection development and maintenance
  • Assist and participate in Library marketing and other projects

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Requirements (Qualification and Experience):

  • A Bachelor of Library & Information Science or an equivalent library qualification
  • One year’s working experience in a library, preferably academic or research setting

Required Competencies (skills, Knowledge And Behavioural Attributes)

  • Experience with user services
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently
  • Good knowledge of MS 365 Office
  • Knowledge of library management systems and databases
  • Exposure to open science activities
