Job description

Job Title: Librarian (Higher Education) Reports to: Academic Head

Location: Claremont, Cape Town



The Librarian supports the academic mission of the institution by providing expert library services, research support, and information literacy instruction to students, faculty, and staff in order to enhance teaching, learning and research.



For this position, you will have to demonstrate outstanding interpersonal skills, as a great part of your job will involve interacting with lecturers, students, and publishers. The ideal candidate should also possess in-depth knowledge of library database systems, as well as excellent communication and organisational skills





Responsibilities and Accountabilities:



Collection and Management

  • Select, evaluate, and maintain library collections (print and electronic) in line with academic program needs
  • Custodian of all library resources including cataloging library resources - e., all physical books, ebooks, videos, courseware, and publications
  • Managing the relationship with all academic publishers, including Ebsco or such other provider of digital resources for students and faculty as well as suppliers of prescribed textbooks or courseware issued or published to students and faculty
  • Maintaining accurate library records at all times and providing reports and inventory to stakeholders upon request
  • Monitor usage statistics and make evidence-based acquisition decision
  • Performing regular audits of the information and inventory on file
  • Managing and reporting on library budgets
  • General oversight of, and management of, procedures for acquisitions and broader knowledge and information management to support the academic programmes of SACOB and the broader academic development of students and staff


Academic Support and Liaison Services

  • Serve as the primary liaison to assigned academic departments or faculties
  • Provide subject-specific research consultations to students and faculty
  • Collaborate with faculty to integrate information literacy into the curriculum
  • Support students and researchers with literature searches, referencing, and citation management


Teaching and Learning:

  • Educating and supporting students and faculty on a continuous basis on how to properly search for information using the library databases
  • Develop and deliver workshops and tutorials on information literacy, academic integrity, and research skills
  • Create digital learning materials, including online guides and video tutorials


Services:

  • Assist with academic events and orientation programs
  • Clarifying the use of library amenities and providing information about library policies
  • Overseeing the check-out process for books and other library resource materials
  • Offer frontline reference and enquiry services, both in-person and online




Qualifications and Experience:

Essential:



  • Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Degree in Library and Information Studies (or equivalent)
  • At least 2 years' experience in an academic or higher education library
  • Strong understanding of higher education learning and research environments
  • Familiarity with library management systems and discovery tools (e.g. EBSCOhost, Plagiarism Check)


Working Conditions:

  • Full-time position with occasional evening or weekend duties
  • Based on-site, at our offices in Claremont, Cape Town (possible remote working options once a week)

As soon as possible (latest being 1 Aug 2025)
