Job summary

The role focuses on identifying and mitigating legal and contractual risks, managing the contract lifecycle, and providing practical legal guidance to management and operating teams in a dynamic insurance environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in BCom Law and admitted Attorney of the High Court of SA.
• Strong knowledge of SA commercial and contract law, with understanding of SA Insurance/Financial Services regulation.
• Experience in short-term insurance is advantageous.
• Experience in similar roles within the legal profession.

Responsibilities

• Provide practical and commercially focused legal advice to management and business units on legal, regulatory, and contractual matters.
• Identify, assess, and mitigate legal risks arising from operations, products, contracts, and commercial relationships.
• Draft, review, negotiate, and manage commercial and insurance-related agreements (including binder agreements, intermediary agreements, outsourcing agreements, SLAs, risk-sharing and cell arrangements, and NDAs).
• Oversee the company’s contract lifecycle management framework, maintain centralised repositories, and monitor key obligations.
• Provide legal support to governance committees, including drafting meeting minutes and governance documentation.

The incumbent is responsible for providing strategic and operational legal support to the business, ensuring that its activities, contractual arrangements, and commercial relationships are legally sound, commercially appropriate, and aligned with applicable legislation and regulatory requirements within the South African non-life insurance industry. The role is responsible for identifying, assessing, and mitigating legal and contractual risk, managing the business’s contractual framework, supporting regulatory compliance and governance, and providing practical legal advice to management and operational teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in BCom Law and admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
• Sound knowledge of South African commercial and contract law, with a strong understanding of the South African Insurance and Financial Services regulatory environment.
• Experience in short-term insurance will be an advantage.
• Experience in similar roles with an emphasis in the legal profession.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Excellent organisational, time management, communication, and interpersonal abilities.
