Job summary

Takealot Group, the largest and most customer-centric online shopping destination in Africa, seeks a Legal Counsel II to join the Cape Town team. You will draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts for Takealot.com and MrD, update templates, advise on disputes, employment law, franchise, banking, IP, and monitor new legal developments.

You will mentor junior lawyers and help design scalable legal SOPs.

Qualifications

  • LLB, admitted attorney or advocate in South Africa.
  • 5-8 years post-admission experience at the bar, a well-established law firm, or in-house legal department of a large corporate.
  • Experience in corporate and commercial law is essential, and particularly in drafting and reviewing contracts.
  • Experience leading and/or mentoring legal professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Draft, review and assist with the negotiation of various commercial contracts on behalf of the Takealot Group businesses, e.g. Takealot.com and MrD.
  • Update and improve template documents
  • Advise on dispute resolution and general litigation matters
  • Advise on employment law matters
  • Advise on franchise network legal matters
  • Advise on banking and finance legal matters
  • Manage the Group’s intellectual property portfolio and assist with settlement of IP disputes
  • Monitor and advise on new legal developments affecting the Group
  • Conduct legal research, draft legal opinions, and provide legal advice as required
  • Provide and/or facilitate training
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders
  • Assist to mentor and develop other legal team members
  • Assist with design, implementation, and management of software and AI SOPs for scalable legal services
  • Support the legal team as required

Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel: Takealot.com/MrD, your responsibilities will include:
  • Draft, review and assist with the negotiation of various commercial contracts on behalf of the Takealot Group businesses, eg Takealot.com and MrD.
  • Update and improve template documents
  • Advise on and attend to dispute resolution and general litigation matters
  • Advise on and attend to employment law matters
  • Advise on and attend to franchise network legal matters
  • Advise on and attend to banking and finance legal matters
  • Manage the Takealot Group’s intellectual property portfolio and assist with the settlement of intellectual property disputes
  • Monitor and advise on new legal developments affecting the Takealot Group
  • Conduct legal research, draft legal opinions, and provide legal advice to the Takealot.com and MrD, as required
  • Provide and/or facilitate training
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders of Takealot.com and MrD primarily and to the Group, as and when required
  • Assist to mentor and develop other legal team members
  • Assist with the design, implementation, and management of software and AI technology, and their standard operating procedures (SOPs), to aid the delivery of legal services to Takealot.com and MrD that is scalable to the Group
  • Support the legal team as required

Qualifications & Experience:

Preferred:
  • Experience in e-commerce or retail would be ideal
